How to Remove Location Data from Photos

Strip the hidden GPS tag off photos before you post or send them so people cannot find where you took them.

    1

On iPhone, open the photo in the Photos app

    ~15s
Tap the photo you want to share. Swipe up on the photo or tap the (i) info icon at the bottom to see a map showing where it was taken.
    2

Tap Adjust to remove the location

    ~15s
Under the map, tap the word "Adjust" and then tap "No Location". The GPS tag is now stripped from that photo.
    3

    On Android, open Google Photos

    ~15s
Find the photo and tap the three-dot menu at the top right. Scroll down and tap "Remove geo-location" to strip the GPS tag.
    4

For multiple photos, turn off location when taking them

    ~15s
In your Camera settings, look for "Location tags" or "GPS" and turn it off. From now on, new photos will not have location attached in the first place.
    5

    Share without location

    ~15s
Send the adjusted photo by text, email, or upload. The receiver can still see the picture, but they cannot see where you were when you took it.

Every photo your phone takes has hidden data attached to it, including the exact GPS spot where you stood when you snapped it. If you text or post that photo, anyone with basic tools can pull out that location.

Most social networks strip this data automatically, but texting and email usually do not. Removing location before you share keeps your home address and daily spots private.
