How to Set Up a New Amazon Fire Tablet

A step-by-step guide to setting up your new Fire tablet: connecting to Wi-Fi, signing in with your Amazon account, and installing your first apps.

Charge the tablet before starting

Plug your Fire tablet in to charge using the included cable before you begin setup. A tablet with a very low battery may not complete setup without dying mid-process. Let it charge for at least 30 minutes, or until the battery icon shows it's sufficiently charged.

Power on and connect to Wi-Fi

Press and hold the power button on the side or back of the tablet until the screen lights up. After a moment, a setup screen will appear. Follow the on-screen prompts. When asked to connect to Wi-Fi, tap your home network's name from the list that appears, then type your Wi-Fi password and tap "Connect."

Warning

Your Wi-Fi password is case-sensitive. If the connection fails, double-check that you typed upper and lowercase letters correctly. The password is usually on a sticker on your router.

Sign in with your Amazon account

After connecting to Wi-Fi, you'll be prompted to sign in with your Amazon account. Enter the email address and password you use on Amazon.com. If you don't have an Amazon account, tap "Create a new Amazon account" and follow the steps to make one for free. Once signed in, your tablet is registered to your account.

If you forget your Amazon password, tap "Forgot your password?" and Amazon will send a reset link to your email.

Complete the setup wizard

Follow any remaining setup screens. You may be asked about setting a 1-click purchasing PIN (recommended, to prevent accidental purchases), connecting a payment method, or setting up Amazon Kids. Read each screen carefully and choose what applies to you. Tap "Continue" or "Skip" to move forward.

Find and install apps from the Amazon Appstore

Tap the orange shopping bag icon labeled "Appstore" on your home screen. Use the search bar at the top to search for apps you want — try "Netflix," "YouTube," "Zoom," or "Facebook." Tap an app's name, then tap "Get" or "Download" (free apps say "Free"). The app will install and appear on your home screen.

Adjust display size for comfortable reading

Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the settings gear icon. Go to Display > Display Size or go to Accessibility > Screen Magnification. Increase the display or font size to a comfortable level. Many people find the Fire tablet easier to use with display size set one step larger than default.

Fire tablets come with limited internal storage (32GB or 64GB on most models). You can add more storage using a microSD card, which slides into a small slot on the side of the tablet — this is a good idea if you plan to download many books or videos for offline viewing. The tablet will also periodically download software updates automatically. Let these install when prompted. They improve performance and fix security issues.
