How to Use Android Auto in Your Car

Android Auto displays your phone's maps, music, and messages on your car's screen — keeping your eyes on the road while staying connected.

    1

Check if your car and phone support Android Auto

    ~18s
Android Auto is built into the settings of most Android phones running Android 9 or later. Most cars made after 2017 include Android Auto — check your car's manual or look for the Android Auto logo on the infotainment screen. For a list of compatible vehicles, go to android.com/auto.
    2

Connect your Android phone to your car

    ~25s
Wired: Plug your Android phone into the USB port in your car using a USB-A to USB-C cable (or whatever cable your phone uses). Android Auto should launch on the car's screen within 30-60 seconds. On the first connection, you'll need to accept Android Auto's permissions on your phone screen. Wireless: Some newer Android phones and cars connect wirelessly via Bluetooth and WiFi — look for an Android Auto option in your car's Bluetooth settings.
    3

Navigate with Google Maps on Android Auto

    ~18s
Tap the navigation icon on your car's Android Auto screen. Google Maps opens on the car's display. Search for your destination by tapping the search bar or saying "OK Google, navigate to [destination]." Google Maps shows turn-by-turn directions on the car's screen while speaking directions through the car's speakers.

Use your voice for calls and messages

    ~25s
Say "OK Google" or "Hey Google" to activate the voice assistant while Android Auto is running. "OK Google, call home" — "OK Google, read my messages" — "OK Google, play jazz music." You can also tap the microphone icon on the Android Auto screen at any time to give a voice command. For messages, Google Assistant reads them aloud and can send a voice reply so you never need to look at your phone.
