How to Translate Text and Speech on Android

Android can translate text, speech, and even text in photos using Google Translate — with offline support for over 50 languages.

    1

    Download Google Translate if needed

    ~15s
Search "Google Translate" in the Play Store and install it. Many Android phones have it pre-installed. The icon is blue with a white letter "A" and diagonal lines.
    2

Type or paste text to translate

    ~15s
Open Google Translate. Tap the top language box to set your source language (or leave it as "Detect Language"). Set the target language in the bottom box. Type or paste your text.
    3

Use the camera to translate a sign or menu

    ~17s
Tap the camera icon in the app. Point your phone at the text you want to translate. The app overlays the translation directly on top of the text in real time.

    Quick Tip

This works best in good lighting. Darker text on a white background translates most accurately.

    4

    Enable Tap to Translate

    ~15s
In Google TranslateSettingsTap to Translate → turn it on. Now, whenever you copy text in any app, a translate button appears. Tap it to see the translation immediately.
    5

Download a language for offline use

    ~16s
In Google Translate → tap the three-line menu → Downloaded Languages → tap the download icon next to a language (like Spanish). Once downloaded, translations work without internet.

    Warning

Online translation is more accurate than offline. When internet is available, it connects automatically for better results.

Android phones have several built-in translation tools powered by Google Translate. You can translate typed text, spoken words, or even text inside a photo — useful for menus, signs, and documents in a foreign language.

    Google Translate app

: The main translation tool. Available in the Play Store and pre-installed on many Android phones. It supports translation between 130+ languages, voice translation, camera translation (point your phone at text to see an overlay translation), and Conversation mode where two people speak different languages.

    Gboard (Google Keyboard) translation

: The default Android keyboard has a built-in translate button. While typing in any app, tap the translate icon in the keyboard to translate what you have typed or the text in the message box before sending.

    Select to Translate

: On many Android phones, when you select (highlight) text in any app, a "Translate" option appears in the context menu. Tap it for an instant translation without opening a separate app.

    Tap to Translate

: In Google Translate settings, enable "Tap to Translate." After copying any text anywhere on your phone, a small translate button appears. Tap it to translate the copied text immediately.

Google Translate's camera feature is particularly useful for older adults dealing with foreign language mail, prescription instructions from another language, or restaurant menus when traveling.
