How to Make Text and Screens Easier to See on Android

Android phones have several built-in settings that make text larger, screens brighter and higher contrast, and displays easier to read for people with vision challenges.

    1

    Find Accessibility settings

    ~15s
Open the Settings app on your Android phone. Look for "Accessibility" in the list — it may be near the bottom. On Samsung Galaxy phones it's called "Accessibility." On Google Pixel phones it's under Settings > Accessibility. Tap to open.
    2

    Increase text size

    ~22s
Tap "Text and display" (or "Font size" on some phones). Move the text size slider to the right to make text larger. You'll see a preview at the top of the screen showing how large your text will be. Most people find "Large" or "Larger" comfortable.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: On Samsung phones, look for both "Font size" (text only) and "Screen zoom" (everything). Increasing both together makes the biggest difference.

    3

    Increase display size

    ~15s
Also in Text and display settings, look for "Display size" or "Screen zoom." Moving this to the right makes everything on screen bigger — app icons, buttons, menu items, not just text. This is often the most dramatic improvement for people who struggle with small targets.
    4

    Turn on high contrast text

    ~15s
In Accessibility > Text and display, look for "High contrast text" and turn it on. This makes text appear bolder against its background, which improves readability. On some phones this is under "Visibility enhancements."
    5

Explore color correction and dark mode

    ~19s
If colors are hard to distinguish, look for "Color correction" or "Color adjustment" in Accessibility settings — it can adjust for common color blindness types. Also try turning on Dark mode (Settings > Display > Dark theme) which shows white text on black backgrounds throughout the phone, many people find this much easier on the eyes.

If you find the text on your Android phone too small, the screen too dim, or the colors hard to distinguish, you don't need a different phone — you need to adjust the settings. Android has robust accessibility features specifically designed for people with vision challenges, and most of them are turned off by default because they're not needed by everyone.

Changing these settings takes about five minutes and can make your phone dramatically easier to use. You can increase text size, increase the overall display size (making everything bigger, not just text), turn on high contrast, enable color correction, or activate TalkBack (which reads everything on screen aloud).

This guide covers the most useful visual adjustments without going into highly specialized accessibility tools.
