How to Recover Access to Your Apple ID

Locked out of your Apple ID? Learn the step-by-step process to recover your account and regain access to your iPhone, iPad, and Apple services.

    1

    Try resetting your password first

    ~27s
On your iPhone, go to Settings → [Your Name] → Sign-In & SecurityChange Password. If you can't access Settings because you're locked out, go to iforgot.apple.com on any browser. Enter your Apple ID email and follow the prompts. Apple will text a verification code to your trusted phone number.

    Quick Tip

If you're not sure what email address you used as your Apple ID, check your oldest Apple purchase confirmation emails, or look on older Apple devices where you might still be signed in.

    2

Verify with a trusted phone number

    ~17s
Apple will send a 6-digit verification code to your trusted phone number (the number on file when you set up your account). Enter the code when prompted. If you no longer have access to that phone number, tap "No access to this number?" to use an alternate recovery method.
    3

Use a Recovery Key if you set one up

    ~27s
If you previously set up a Recovery Key (a 28-character code provided when you turned on Advanced Data Protection), enter it now. This key overrides the phone number verification. Keep your Recovery Key stored securely — if you lose it and lose your phone number, account recovery is much harder.

    Warning

If you have Advanced Data Protection turned on and don't have your Recovery Key or a Recovery Contact, Apple cannot help you recover your account. This is intentional for maximum security.

    4

Use a Recovery Contact (if set up)

    ~22s
If you previously added a trusted person as your Account Recovery Contact, contact them. They open the Apple Support app, verify your identity, and generate a recovery code for you. You then enter this code at iforgot.apple.com.

    Quick Tip

Set up a Recovery Contact now before you ever need it: Settings → [Your Name] → Sign-In & SecurityAccount RecoveryAdd Recovery Contact.

    5

    Use Apple's Account Recovery process

    ~16s
If all else fails, request Account Recovery at iforgot.apple.com. Apple will verify your identity through a manual review process — this can take several days. You'll receive an email with a recovery link when the review is complete. This is the last resort but does work.

Your Apple ID is the account that controls everything on your iPhone and iPad — your photos in iCloud, your App Store purchases, your iMessage account, and your device itself. If you forget your Apple ID password or email address, or get locked out after too many wrong attempts, it can feel like you've lost access to everything.

The good news is that Apple has several recovery options, and in most cases, getting back into your account takes only a few minutes. The process depends on what information you remember and what recovery methods you have set up.

The fastest recovery method is using a trusted phone number associated with your account — Apple sends a verification code via text. You can also use a Recovery Key (if you set one up), or use Account Recovery, which is a longer verification process.

For the best protection, set up Account Recovery Contacts before you need them — these are trusted people (like a family member) who can help you recover your Apple ID if you ever get locked out.

Never pay anyone claiming to "recover" your Apple ID for a fee — this is a scam. All official Apple ID recovery is free through Apple's own website or tools.
