    1

Open Apple Maps and enter your destination

    ~15s
Open the Maps app on your iPhone. Tap the search bar at the bottom of the screen and type your destination address or place name. Tap the location when it appears in the search results to see the location detail card.
    2

    Switch to Transit directions

    ~32s
On the location card, tap "Directions." You will see route options. At the top of the directions screen, look for transport mode buttons — a car icon, a walking person icon, a transit icon (looks like a bus or train), and a bicycle icon. Tap the transit icon (it looks like a small bus). Apple Maps will switch to showing transit route options.

    Quick Tip

If the transit icon is grayed out or does not appear, transit data may not be available for your city or for that specific route. In that case, Apple Maps will suggest walking or driving instead.

    3

    Compare route options

    ~24s
Apple Maps shows several transit route options, each with the estimated total travel time, the number of transfers, and how much walking is involved. Scroll through the options to compare. Each option shows the transit lines used (with their colors and names), the departure time, and the arrival time.

    Quick Tip

Look at the walking distance shown for each route. Sometimes a route with one more transfer saves significant walking, which matters if mobility is a concern.

    4

Select a route and view step-by-step directions

    ~20s
Tap the route you want to take. You will see a detailed breakdown of every step: walk to Station A, take the Blue Line toward Downtown for 5 stops, exit at Station B, walk 3 minutes to your destination. Each transit leg shows the platform or stop number, departure time, and how many stops to ride.
    5

    Check real-time departures

    ~30s
At the top of your selected route, Apple Maps shows the next few available departure times. These are real-time in cities where live transit data is available — meaning if a bus is running five minutes late, the listed time reflects the actual expected departure, not just the schedule. Tap "Go" to start turn-by-turn navigation.

    Warning

Real-time transit data is not available in all cities. In some areas, Apple Maps shows scheduled times only. If your city is not supported, consider using the Google Maps app as an alternative, which has broader transit data coverage.

    6

    View a transit line schedule

    ~25s
To look up a specific transit line without getting directions, zoom in on the Apple Maps main view until you see colored transit lines on the map. Tap on a line to see its name and route. Tap "More Info" or the line details to see the full list of stops and the departure schedule from any stop. This is useful for planning a trip in advance or checking how often a bus or train runs.

Apple Maps on iPhone includes a transit mode that gives you step-by-step directions using public transportation — buses, subways, trains, and ferries. If you are in a city with transit data available, Apple Maps can show you exactly which subway line to take, which stop to get off at, how long to walk to and from stations, and when the next departure is.

Transit mode in Apple Maps is available in many major US cities including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, and others, as well as many cities internationally. Coverage continues to expand with each iOS update.

When you enter a transit route, Apple Maps shows you multiple options. Each option is a different combination of transit lines and walking. For example, one route might require one subway transfer but involve less walking. Another might be a direct bus with no transfer but a longer walk at the end. Apple Maps helps you compare these options clearly so you can pick what works best for you.

Real-time departure information is one of the most useful features. In cities where transit agencies provide real-time data, Apple Maps shows you when the next bus or train is actually leaving — not just the scheduled time. If a train is running late, the app shows the actual expected departure time.

You can also look up individual transit lines to see a schedule. In Apple Maps, you can view transit routes on the map and tap on a line to see the stops, the schedule for that line, and real-time arrivals at each stop. This is useful even when you are not actively navigating somewhere — for example, checking how often your local bus runs.

For regular commuters, saving your home and work addresses in Apple Maps makes getting transit directions faster. From the Maps home screen, you can tap "Commute" to see transit options for your commute instantly, along with the next available departure time.
