    Keep it updated

    Install operating system updates promptly. They fix security vulnerabilities and bugs. Windows: Settings > Update & Security. Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update. Enable automatic updates.

    Restart weekly

    Restart your computer at least once a week. This clears memory, applies pending updates, and resolves many minor issues. Don't just close the lid — actually restart or shut down.

    Clean up storage monthly

    Windows: Settings > System > Storage > Temporary Files. Mac: About This Mac > Storage > Manage. Delete temporary files, empty the Trash/Recycle Bin, and remove programs you no longer use.

    Run antivirus scans

    Windows Defender runs automatically (it's good enough for most people). Run a full scan monthly: Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > Scan Options > Full Scan. Mac: malware is less common but consider Malwarebytes (free).

    Set up automatic backup: Windows File History or OneDrive, Mac Time Machine. Check monthly that backups are actually running. Test by restoring a file sometimes.

    Wipe the screen with a microfiber cloth (slightly damp, no chemicals). Use compressed air to clean keyboard and vents. Clean the mousepad and trackpad. A clean computer runs cooler and lasts longer.

    Clear cookies and cache quarterly. Remove extensions you don't use. Bookmark important sites. Update your browser (usually automatic). Review saved passwords and remove outdated ones.
