    How to Create a Gmail Account

    Set up a free Gmail account in about 5 minutes — you'll get an email address, access to Google Drive, Google Photos, YouTube, and Google Meet.

    Go to Gmail's account creation page

    Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox) and type accounts.google.com/signup in the address bar and press Enter. Or open Gmail.com and click "Create account." A form will appear asking for basic information.

    Enter your name and choose a username

    Fill in your first and last name. Then enter your preferred username — this becomes your email address: [username]@gmail.com. If the name you want is taken, Gmail will suggest available alternatives. You can also modify your choice by adding a number or a period (john.smith or johnsmith1952). Type slowly and double-check the spelling. You can't change your Gmail address once it's created.

    Create a strong password

    Enter a password at least 8 characters long. Use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and a symbol (like ! or # or @). Example: Blue*Sky*1958 is strong, easy to remember, and hard to guess. Avoid: your name, your birthday, your pet's name, or any word alone. Write this password down in a safe place before continuing.

    Add a recovery phone number

    Google asks for your phone number — this is highly recommended even though optional. This number is used to verify it's really you if you ever get locked out. Enter your mobile number and tap Send. Google sends a 6-digit code by text message. Enter that code on screen. Your phone number is stored securely and Google does not sell it to advertisers (you can review this in your account privacy settings).

    Complete setup and sign in

    Fill in any remaining information — birthday (for age verification, not displayed publicly) and gender (optional). Review and accept Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click "I agree." Your Gmail account is now created. You'll be taken directly to your Gmail inbox, which will be empty and ready to use. Download the Gmail app on your phone for easy mobile access.

    Gmail is Google's free email service, and creating a Gmail account gives you much more than just an email address. With one Google account, you get: Gmail for email, Google Drive for storing and sharing files, Google Photos for backing up your pictures, Google Meet for video calls, YouTube for watching videos, and the Google Play Store for downloading apps on Android devices.

    You don't need to be technical to set up Gmail. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. You'll choose your email address (the part before @gmail.com) and a password. Google walks you through the rest.

    A few things to think about before you start. Your email address will be in the format something@gmail.com. Choose something simple and professional that you can easily give out — your name works well. If John Smith is already taken, try johnsmith123 or john.smith.1950 or similar variations.

    Your password should be at least 8 characters and include a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe — you'll need it every time you sign in from a new device.

    Once your account is set up, you'll be using it for years, so take a few extra minutes to set up account recovery options (a backup phone number or backup email). These let you get back into your account if you forget your password.
