A Google account is your key to dozens of free tools: Gmail for email, Google Drive for storing files, Google Photos for your pictures, Google Calendar for scheduling, YouTube for videos, and much more. Creating an account takes about five minutes and costs nothing.
You can use any device to create a Google account — a computer, phone, or tablet. And you do not need to get a Gmail address if you do not want one. You can actually create a Google account using any existing email address (like a Yahoo or Outlook address), though most people choose a new Gmail address for the convenience.
When choosing a Gmail address, pick something that represents you professionally and is easy to remember — many people use their first name plus last name, or initials plus a number. Keep in mind that the address cannot be changed later, so think before you commit.
Your Google password should be strong and unique — at least 8 characters mixing letters, numbers, and symbols. Google will guide you through setting up account recovery options (a phone number or backup email) so you can get back in if you ever forget your password.
After creating your account, stay signed in on your own devices for convenience, but never check "Stay signed in" on a public computer like one at a library.
