How to Set Up Free Credit Monitoring

Monitor your credit for free and get alerts if someone tries to open accounts in your name.

    1

    Get your free credit report

    ~18s
Go to annualcreditreport.com (the only official site). You can get a free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) every week. Review each report for accounts you do not recognize.

    Warning

Only use annualcreditreport.com. Many other sites that say "free credit report" will try to sign you up for paid services.

    2

Set up free monitoring with Credit Karma

    ~15s
Download Credit Karma (completely free, no credit card needed). Create an account with your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. Credit Karma will monitor your TransUnion and Equifax reports and alert you to any changes.
    3

Set up alerts with your bank

    ~15s
Most banks offer free transaction alerts. Log into your bank app, go to Settings or Alerts, and turn on notifications for: purchases over a certain amount, international transactions, online purchases, and account balance changes.
    4

    Consider a credit freeze

    ~24s
A credit freeze prevents anyone (including you) from opening new credit accounts in your name. It is free and does not affect your credit score. Contact each bureau: Equifax (equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-freeze), Experian, and TransUnion. You can temporarily lift it when you need to apply for credit.

    Quick Tip

A credit freeze is the single most effective step you can take against identity theft. It is free, takes 10 minutes, and blocks 90% of fraud attempts.
