Every time you search Google, watch a YouTube video, use Google Maps, or open an app on Android, Google logs the activity to your account. This data is used to personalize ads and recommendations. Many people don't realize how much Google has stored over months or years of use.
You can see everything Google has about you at myactivity.google.com. Sign in with your Google account and you'll find a detailed log of your searches, YouTube watch history, voice commands, location visits, and more. It can be surprising how complete this record is.
To delete specific items, click or tap on any entry and select Delete. To delete everything at once, click Delete in the top right of My Activity, then choose All Time. You'll be asked to confirm. This permanently removes the selected data from Google's servers.
A better long-term solution is to set up Auto-Delete, so Google automatically deletes data older than a certain period. Go to My Activity, click Data & Privacy (or the gear icon), and look for History Settings. Under Web & App Activity, click Auto-delete and choose 3 months or 18 months. Do the same for Location History and YouTube History.
You can also pause activity tracking entirely. Under each history type (Web & App Activity, Location History, YouTube History), toggle off the switch to stop Google from recording new activity. Note that this may make some features less useful — Google Maps may not remember recent searches, and YouTube recommendations may be less relevant.
On your phone, the Google app also stores search history locally. In the Google app, tap your profile picture, then Search history, and delete from there as well. Chrome's browsing history is separate — in Chrome, tap the three dots, then History, then Clear browsing data. Check "Browsing history," choose a time range, and tap Clear data.
After deleting your activity, Google's personalized ads may feel less targeted for a while. YouTube's recommended videos may also seem less relevant. These systems rebuild over time based on future activity.
