How to Store Store Loyalty Cards in Your Phone's Wallet

Stop carrying a wallet full of loyalty cards — your iPhone or Android phone can store them all digitally so you can pull them up at checkout in seconds.

    1

Add Cards to Apple Wallet (iPhone)

    ~22s
Open the Wallet app on your iPhone. Tap the "+" button in the top right. Tap "Other" or "Loyalty & Rewards" (wording varies by iOS version). Search for your store by name. If found, tap it and sign in or enter your rewards number. Alternatively, open the retailer's app (Target, CVS, etc.) — many have a "Add to Apple Wallet" button right in the app.
    2

Add Cards to Google Wallet (Android)

    ~18s
Open the Google Wallet app. If you don't have it, search for "Google Wallet" in Google Play and install it. Tap "Add to Wallet" → "Loyalty card." Search for the store. If supported, enter your card number or scan your physical card. The digital card is added to your Wallet.
    3

Scan Your Physical Card to Add It

    ~27s
For cards not found by store name: in Apple Wallet, tap "+" → "Loyalty Card" → "Scan Code." Hold the card in front of your camera. The app reads the barcode. Add the store name manually and save. In Google Wallet, tap "+" → "Loyalty card" → "Scan barcode" and do the same.

    Quick Tip

Make sure the barcode on your physical card is on a flat, well-lit surface before scanning. Curved fob-style tags may need to be straightened or held at different angles.

    4

    Use the Card at Checkout

    ~20s
When you're at the register and the cashier asks for your rewards card: pull out your phone, open Wallet (Apple) or Google Wallet (Android), find the card, and hold the barcode up to the scanner — the same laser scanner the cashier uses for products. Most scanners read phone screens accurately. If it doesn't read, increase your screen brightness.
    5

    Organize Your Cards

    ~28s
In Apple Wallet, you can rearrange cards by pressing and holding one and dragging it to reorder. Cards you use most often can be moved to the top of the list. Apple also automatically moves relevant cards (like a coffee shop card) to the front when you're near that location, if you allow location access.

    Quick Tip

While you're at it, add your health insurance ID card if your insurer supports it — many do via their apps. This means you'll always have your insurance card on hand for doctor visits.

Most grocery stores, pharmacies, coffee shops, and retailers have loyalty or rewards programs — and most of us carry a pile of plastic cards or key fob tags to use them. Your iPhone or Android phone can store all of these digitally, accessible in seconds at checkout without digging through a wallet.

Both Apple Wallet (iPhone) and Google Wallet (Android) support loyalty and membership cards from thousands of retailers. You scan the barcode on your physical card to add it, or enter the card number, and from then on you can pull it up at checkout just like you would a credit card.

Target, CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, Safeway, Costco, Marriott, Delta, American Airlines, and most major retailers support digital loyalty cards in the phone wallets. Many retailers also have their own apps that work at checkout — but adding cards to Apple or Google Wallet is more convenient because everything lives in one place rather than requiring you to switch between multiple apps.

In Apple Wallet, you can organize passes so the most relevant ones appear at the top. Some passes are smart — a boarding pass appears automatically when you're near the airport, or a coffee shop card appears when you're near that store.

This is also useful for membership cards: library cards, gym memberships, and even health insurance cards (some insurers now offer this). Check if your specific card issuer supports Wallet integration.

Adding cards to your Wallet doesn't replace your physical cards — you can keep them as backups. But over time, you'll likely find you rarely need to bring a physical loyalty wallet anymore.
