    Store the battery at room temperature

    Charge to 80 percent for daily storage, 100 percent for long rides

    Lithium batteries last longer when stored partly charged. If you ride once or twice a week, set the charger to stop at 80 percent (many modern chargers have a button for this). For an all-day ride, charge to 100 percent the night before. Avoid leaving the battery on a finished charger for days.

    Track your real-world range

    Most e-bike apps (Bosch eBike Flow, Shimano E-Tube Project Cyclist, Specialized Mission Control, Trek Central) show estimated remaining range based on how you ride. After your first few rides, you will know your actual range. Plan rides to use no more than 70 percent of the battery. So you have margin for headwinds, hills, or a wrong turn.

    Never assume the manufacturer's stated range will match your real range. A bike rated for 60 miles often goes 30 to 40 under real conditions.

    Carry a second battery on longer rides

    Many bikes accept a second battery in a frame slot or a rack-mounted box. A spare battery costs 400 to 800 dollars and doubles your range. Cheaper option: plan rides that loop back near home or a charging spot. Some bike shops, restaurants, and trail stops welcome e-bike charging if you ask in advance.

    Know how to pedal home with a dead battery

    When the battery dies, the motor stops helping. Shift to a lower gear, slow down, and pedal home. An e-bike is heavier than a regular bike, so plan for half your usual speed on flat ground. Avoid steep hills if possible. Walking the bike is fine and saves your knees.

    An e-bike battery is the most expensive single part on the bike, often 500 to 900 dollars to replace. The good news is that with reasonable care, a quality battery lasts 3 to 5 years (or roughly 500 full charge cycles) before it loses noticeable range. The two main enemies are heat and deep discharge. Both can be avoided.

    First, store the battery at room temperature. A garage that hits 100 degrees in summer or 20 degrees in winter will shorten battery life faster than anything else. If your garage gets extreme, bring the battery inside between rides. Most batteries detach from the frame in seconds with a key.

    Second, do not let the battery fully discharge or fully charge for long periods. The Bosch and Shimano battery manuals both recommend keeping the charge between 30 and 80 percent for long-term storage (more than a week). For daily riding, charging to full and using it down to 20 percent is fine. Use the manufacturer's charger only.

    Range depends on five things: rider weight, terrain, wind, assist level, and battery age. A new 500 watt-hour battery on flat ground in low assist will go 40 to 70 miles. The same battery on hilly terrain in high assist might only do 20. Most bike apps (Bosch eBike Flow, Shimano E-Tube, Specialized Mission Control) show real-time range estimates that adjust as you ride.

    When the battery dies, the motor stops but the bike is still a bicycle. You can pedal it home. An e-bike is heavier than a regular bike (usually 50 to 65 pounds), so plan for slower speeds and use lower gears. If you cannot pedal it home, most e-bikes are covered by standard roadside help programs (AAA Plus, BetterWorldClub, or Velosurance) that will pick you up.
