Sign up and choose your guitar style

    ~37s
Go to fenderplay.com or download the Fender Play app from the App Store or Google Play. Create a free account with your email address. During setup, the app asks what kind of music you want to play — rock, pop, country, blues, or folk. It also asks whether you have an acoustic or electric guitar. Choose the style that matches the music you enjoy listening to most. You can change this later if you want to explore a different style.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you are unsure which style to pick, choose the one that matches the music you listen to most often. You will stay motivated longer if you are learning songs you already love.

    2

Watch the very first lesson: holding your guitar

    ~25s
Your first lesson covers the physical basics — how to hold the guitar, how to sit with it, and how to hold a guitar pick. Watch the full video before trying anything yourself. The instructor demonstrates both seated and standing positions and shows you common mistakes to avoid, like hunching your shoulders or gripping the pick too tightly. These basics affect everything you learn afterward, so getting them right from the start matters.
    3

    Learn your first chord

    ~43s
Fender Play introduces chords in a specific order designed to make the transitions between them as smooth as possible. Your first chord is usually an E minor or an A minor — both use only two or three fingers and are foundational for hundreds of songs. The video shows a close-up of the instructor's fretting hand, and diagrams on screen show which fingers go on which frets. Press the strings down firmly with the tips of your fingers, not the flat pads, and strum downward.

    Warning

Your fingertips will be sore for the first one to two weeks. This is completely normal and expected. The skin on your fingertips will toughen over time — a process called building calluses. Do not stop because of the discomfort. Short daily sessions help your fingers adjust faster than long infrequent ones.

    4

Work toward your first full song

    ~37s
After learning two or three chords, Fender Play introduces a song that uses only those chords. The song lesson breaks the song into small sections — verse, chorus, intro — and teaches each one separately before combining them. A slow-motion playback option lets you watch the instructor's hands at half speed. Play along with the song once you feel ready. You do not have to be perfect to move forward — consistency matters more than perfection.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Record a short video of yourself playing on your phone. Watching yourself from the outside reveals things you cannot feel while playing — like a wrist position that looks awkward or a strumming motion that is too stiff.

    5

    Build a consistent practice habit

    ~25s
Fender Play shows your streak — the number of consecutive days you have practiced — on your profile. Even ten minutes a day produces faster improvement than a two-hour session once a week. Set a reminder on your phone for the same time each day. Most learners find morning practice before the day gets busy works well. After four to six weeks of daily practice, chord changes that felt impossible will start to feel natural.

Fender Play is a guitar learning app and website made by Fender, the company behind some of the most well-known electric and acoustic guitars in history. The platform is designed specifically for people who have never played guitar before. Every lesson is taught by a real musician on camera, and the instruction is clear, patient, and focused on getting you playing actual songs as quickly as possible.

What makes Fender Play different from watching random YouTube videos is its structured path system. When you sign up, you choose a music style — rock, pop, blues, country, or folk — and Fender Play builds a personalized learning path for you. You are not searching for what to learn next. The app tells you your next lesson, your next song, and what skill you are building. This structure is especially helpful for beginners who do not yet know what they do not know.

The lessons are short by design. Most run between three and seven minutes. This makes it realistic to fit a practice session into a busy day, and it keeps the content focused on one skill at a time rather than overwhelming you with information. After each lesson, you try the skill yourself.

Fender Play teaches both acoustic and electric guitar. You do not need a Fender instrument to use the app — any guitar works. The song library includes hundreds of recognizable titles from artists like The Beatles, Nirvana, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash, and many others.

A free trial gives you full access for a limited time. After that, a monthly or annual subscription continues access. You can learn more at fenderplay.com. Fender also has an official YouTube channel with supplementary content.
