    Understanding Your Home Network

Learn what modems, routers, and Wi-Fi extenders do and how to optimize your home network.

    1

    Modem vs router

    ~15s
The modem connects your home to the internet (from your ISP). The router creates your Wi-Fi network and connects your devices. Some devices combine both into one unit (gateway).
    2

    Wi-Fi bands explained

    ~15s
2.4 GHz: longer range, slower speed, travels through walls better. 5 GHz: shorter range, faster speed, best for streaming and gaming nearby. Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz for even faster speeds.
    3

    Optimal router placement

    ~15s
Place your router centrally, elevated (shelf height), away from walls and metal objects. Don't put it inside a cabinet, near a microwave, or on the floor. Central placement gives the best coverage.
    4

    Ethernet vs Wi-Fi

    ~15s
Ethernet cables provide faster, more reliable connections. Use ethernet for desktop computers, gaming consoles, and smart TVs when possible. Wi-Fi is for mobile devices and convenience.
    5

    Wi-Fi extenders and mesh systems

    ~15s
Extenders repeat your signal but halve speed. Mesh systems (Google Nest WiFi, Eero, TP-Link Deco) are better — they create one smooth network with multiple access points.
    6

How many devices is too many?

    ~15s
A typical router handles 20-30 devices. Count all connected devices: phones, tablets, computers, smart TVs, smart home devices, thermostats. If you have 30+, consider a newer Wi-Fi 6 router.
    7

    Check what's connected

    ~15s
Log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1) or use the Fing app (free) to see all devices on your network. Remove any you don't recognize and change your password if needed.
