How to Turn On Dark Mode on iPhone, Android, and Windows

Dark mode changes bright white screens to dark backgrounds — easier on the eyes at night and helpful for people with light sensitivity.

    1

Turn on dark mode on iPhone

    ~27s
Go to SettingsDisplay & Brightness. Under "Appearance," you'll see two options: Light and Dark. Tap "Dark" to turn on dark mode across your entire iPhone. All of Apple's built-in apps and most third-party apps will switch to dark mode immediately.

    Quick Tip

Scroll down to "Automatic" and turn it on to have your iPhone automatically switch to dark mode at sunset and back to light mode at sunrise. This is a popular option that most people find easy on their eyes.

    2

Turn on dark mode on Android

    ~24s
Go to SettingsDisplay (the exact location varies by phone model). Look for "Dark mode," "Dark theme," or "Night mode." Tap it to toggle it on. On Samsung Galaxy phones: SettingsDisplayDark mode. On Google Pixel phones: SettingsDisplayDark theme. On most Android phones, you can also quickly toggle dark mode from the quick settings panel by swiping down twice from the top of the screen.
    3

Turn on dark mode on Windows 11

    ~19s
Click the Start buttonSettings (gear icon) → PersonalizationColors. Under "Choose your mode," click the dropdown and select "Dark." Windows switches to a dark theme for all built-in apps and the taskbar immediately. Note: some third-party apps have their own light/dark settings that you'll need to change within the app itself.

Turn on dark mode in specific apps

    ~33s
Many apps have their own dark mode setting independent of your device's setting. In Gmail: tap the three horizontal lines → Settings → tap your email address → ThemeDark. In Facebook: tap the three horizontal lines (menu) → Settings & PrivacySettingsDark ModeOn. In YouTube: tap your profile picture → AppearanceDark theme.

    Quick Tip

If white backgrounds cause eye strain or headaches, also try "Night Shift" on iPhone (SettingsDisplay & BrightnessNight Shift) which reduces blue light in the evenings. Windows has a similar feature called "Night light" in SettingsDisplay.
