When your Android phone fills up with photos, videos, and apps, it slows down and stops being able to download new apps or take pictures. Here's how to quickly reclaim storage space — step by step.
How to check your storage:
Go to Settings → Storage (or Settings → Device Care → Storage on Samsung phones). You'll see a breakdown of how much space is used and what's using it.
Step 1: Delete or back up your photos and videos
Photos and videos — especially videos — are usually the biggest storage hogs. A single 1-minute video can be 200MB or more.
Option A: Move photos to Google Photos (free, up to 15 GB): 1. Download the Google Photos app if you don't have it. 2. Open it and tap your profile picture → "Manage storage." 3. Tap "Back up" to upload all your photos to Google's servers. 4. Once backed up, you can safely delete them from your phone to free space.
Option B: Delete photos you don't need: Open Google Photos or your Gallery app and delete duplicates, blurry shots, and screenshots you no longer need.
Step 2: Clear app caches
Apps store temporary files ("cache") that can build up over time. Clearing the cache is safe. It doesn't delete your data, just temporary files.
Go to Settings → Storage → Other Apps (or Apps). Tap any app → Storage → "Clear Cache."
For a quicker option: Settings → Storage → tap "Cached data" → tap OK to clear all caches at once.
Step 3: Delete apps you don't use
Go to Settings → Apps. Look through the list for apps you haven't opened in months. Tap any one → "Uninstall." If you need the app again later, you can always download it again for free.
Step 4: Move files to a cloud service
If you have documents, downloads, or music taking up space: - Move files to Google Drive (free 15 GB): open the Google Drive app → tap the + button → Upload. - Move music to a streaming service like Spotify or YouTube Music instead of keeping songs downloaded.
Step 5: Use the built-in storage cleaner
Many Android phones have a built-in "Free Up Space" or "Storage Optimizer" tool. Look for it in Settings → Storage → Free Up Space. It automatically identifies large files, unused apps, and duplicates you can safely delete.
Quick Tip:
Empty your Downloads folder — it's often full of files you've forgotten about. Open your Files app → Downloads and delete anything you no longer need.
