    Start by asking what you will actually use it for

    When you are shopping for a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer, the product page is full of numbers and technical terms that can feel overwhelming. The good news is that for most everyday users, only about five of those specs actually matter for how the device will feel to use day to day.

    The first is the processor, also called the CPU. This is the brain of the computer. For everyday tasks like browsing the internet, watching videos, video calls, and writing emails, any modern processor from the last three to four years will be more than fast enough. You only need to pay close attention to processor performance if you plan to edit videos, work with large spreadsheets, or run demanding programs.

    The second is RAM, which stands for Random Access Memory. Think of RAM as your desk space — the more RAM you have, the more things you can have open and running at the same time without the computer slowing down. For browsing, emails, and streaming, 8 GB of RAM is fine. If you like having many browser tabs open at once, or you use productivity software, 16 GB is noticeably better. Video editors and people who run multiple demanding programs should look for 32 GB.

    The third is storage. This is where your files, photos, and programs are saved. You will see two types: HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and SSD (Solid State Drive).
