How to Get Back Into a Facebook Account That Was Hacked

If someone has gotten into your Facebook account and changed the password, there is still a way to get back in — here's exactly how.

    1

Use the "Forgot password?" link on Facebook

    ~20s
Go to facebook.com and click "Forgot password?" below the login box. Type in the email address or phone number connected to your account and click "Search." Facebook will find your account and show you options to verify your identity — it may offer to send a code to your phone, email, or let you answer security questions.
    2

Request a recovery code to your phone

    ~21s
If Facebook offers to send a code to your phone number, choose that option. A text message with a 6-digit code will arrive within a minute or two. Enter that code on the Facebook page and you'll be able to set a new password. Choose something you haven't used before — at least 12 characters mixing letters and numbers.
    3

If the hacker changed your email and phone number

    ~33s
If you can't receive a code because the hacker changed your contact information, look for a link that says "No longer have access to these?" or "Try another way." Facebook will ask you to go through an identity verification process that may include answering questions about your account, identifying friends from photos, or uploading a photo ID. This process can take 1-3 days.

    Quick Tip

Be patient with this process — Facebook reviews these cases manually. Submitting accurate information the first time is important. Don't try to submit multiple recovery requests at once as it can slow things down.

    4

Secure your account immediately after recovering access

    ~32s
Once you're back in, do all of these things right away: (1) Change your password to something new and strong. (2) Go to SettingsSecurity and Login → turn on two-factor authentication. (3) Go to SettingsSecurity and Login → scroll to "Where You're Logged In" and log out of all other sessions. (4) Go to SettingsApps and Websites and remove any apps you don't recognize.

    Warning

After a hack, scammers sometimes leave behind connected apps that let them continue accessing your account even after you change the password. Removing unknown apps is essential.
