How to Take a Screenshot on Your iPhone

Taking a screenshot on iPhone captures everything on your screen as a photo — here's the button combination for every iPhone model.

    1

Take a screenshot on iPhones with Face ID (iPhone X and newer)

    ~32s
Press the Side button (on the right side of the phone) and the Volume Up button (on the left side) at the same time. Press them simultaneously — not one after the other. Release both buttons. You'll see a white flash and hear a camera shutter sound (if your volume is on). A small thumbnail of the screenshot appears in the bottom left corner.

    Quick Tip

Pressing both buttons simultaneously is the tricky part — if the screenshot isn't working, try pressing the Side button first and then quickly adding the Volume Up button.

    2

Take a screenshot on iPhones with a Home button (iPhone 8 and older)

    ~18s
Press the Home button (the round button at the bottom center) and the Side or Sleep/Wake button (on the right side) at the same time. You'll see a white flash and hear the shutter sound. The screenshot thumbnail appears in the bottom left corner.
    3

    View and share your screenshot

    ~23s
Tap the thumbnail in the bottom left corner right after taking the screenshot to open the markup editor — you can add arrows or text to highlight something. Tap "Done" to save it, or tap the Share icon to immediately send it by text or email. If you don't tap the thumbnail, it disappears after a few seconds but is automatically saved to your Photos app in the "Recents" album.
