A short, kind text message takes less than a minute and can make someone's whole day. You do not need to write a long letter or wait for a special occasion. A single sentence such as "Thinking of you today, hope you are well" lands in someone's pocket and brings a smile. For grown children, busy adult grandchildren, old friends, and neighbors, a quick check-in keeps the relationship warm without putting pressure on the other person to respond right away.
Many older adults hesitate to text because they worry about being a bother or saying the wrong thing. The good news is that a thinking-of-you text has a very low bar. There is no question to answer, no plan to make, no decision to weigh. The other person reads it, feels remembered, and replies whenever they have time. According to a Pew Research Center study, more than 80 percent of adults say a brief check-in message from a loved one improves their mood for the rest of the day.
There are a few ways to send these messages. The most common is the Messages app on iPhone (the green speech bubble icon) or the Messages app on Android (the blue and white speech bubble). Both let you tap a contact and type a short note. If the person uses an iPhone like you do, the message appears in blue and is sent over the internet for free. If they use Android, the message goes as a regular text and is included in your phone plan.
Voice typing is a wonderful tool if typing on a small keyboard feels slow. On iPhone, tap the microphone icon next to the space bar and speak your message. On Android, the same microphone icon appears on the keyboard. Speak slowly and clearly. The phone will turn your words into text. Tap the arrow or send button to send.
A few simple message ideas: "Thinking of you today, sending love." "Just remembered our trip to the lake. Hope all is well." "No need to reply, just wanted you to know I was thinking of you." Keep it short and from the heart.
