How to Turn Off Google AI Overviews in Search Results

Google's AI summaries can hide the actual search results you're looking for. Here's how to get back to traditional results.

    1

Use the "Web" filter after searching

    ~24s
After typing your search in Google and pressing Enter, look just below the search bar for filter options like "All," "Images," "News," "Shopping." Click "More" to see additional options, then select "Web." This view shows traditional links only — no AI summary at the top.

    Quick Tip

Once you click "Web," Google remembers the filter for the rest of your session. You will need to do this again in a new browser window.

    2

    Add "verbatim" to your search

    ~16s
At the end of any search, add the word verbatim (for example: "best plants for indoors verbatim"). This tells Google to search for your exact words and typically skips the AI Overview. You can also try adding -ai at the end of your search as an alternative.
    3

    Try a different search engine

    ~15s
DuckDuckGo (duckduckgo.com) does not show AI summaries by default and respects your privacy more than Google — it does not track your searches. Bing also lets you turn off AI answers in its settings if you prefer Microsoft's search engine.

Google's AI Overview feature summarizes results at the top of the page, which can push down the actual links you want. To bypass it: after searching, click "More" under the search bar and select "Web" to see traditional results only. You can also try adding "-ai" or "verbatim" to your search, or switch to a search engine like DuckDuckGo that doesn't use AI summaries by default.
