If you have ever been driving through a rural area and had your navigation cut out because you lost cell signal, you know how frustrating that is. Google Maps has a feature that lets you download a section of the map to your phone while you are still at home on Wi-Fi, so you can navigate even when there is no internet connection. This is especially helpful when traveling to rural areas, national parks, or international locations where you do not have a data plan.
To download a map on an iPhone or Android: Open Google Maps and make sure you are signed into your Google account. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner. Tap "Offline maps." Tap "Select your own map." A box will appear over the map — drag and resize it to cover the area you want to save (for example, the city and surrounding area where you are traveling). Tap "Download." The app will show you how much phone storage the map will use, and then download it. This usually takes a few minutes on Wi-Fi.
Once downloaded, the map works just like the regular Google Maps when you are offline — you can search for addresses, get turn-by-turn directions, and see where you are on the map. The only thing that does not work offline is live traffic updates and business reviews. Offline maps are stored for 30 days and then need to be re-downloaded (Google will remind you).
