    How to Use a Portable Air Conditioner Safely

    Place the Unit on a Hard Flat Surface Near a Window

    Choose a spot within six feet of a window that you can open. Place the portable AC on a hard flat surface, such as tile, hardwood, or low-pile carpet. Do not put it on plush carpet or rugs that can block the bottom air intake or let the unit tilt. Keep at least 12 inches of open space behind and on each side of the unit so air can flow into the back. Do not push it tight against a wall or wedge it into a corner. Make sure the floor under the unit is level by setting a small spirit level or even a marble on top. If the marble rolls, the floor is sloped and water may not drain correctly. Choose a window away from direct sunlight if possible, because the hot exhaust hose works less well in direct sun. Avoid placing the unit in a doorway or hallway where someone could trip on the power cord or knock the unit over while walking through.

    Warning

    Never operate a portable air conditioner with the hose disconnected or vented inside the room. Without venting outside, the unit only moves heat from one part of the room to another and adds humidity from the compressor, making the room warmer over time.

    Install the Window Vent Kit Correctly

    Every portable AC comes with a window vent kit, usually a flat plastic panel that fits in the open part of the window. Open the window 6 to 14 inches depending on the kit size. Place the panel in the gap, extending it to fit the window width. Most kits have an adjustable slider. Tighten the side screws once the fit is snug. The kit has a round opening in the middle for the exhaust hose. Attach the hose to the unit on one end and to the window kit on the other end, twisting clockwise until it locks. Keep the hose as short and straight as possible. Long bends and loops force the AC to work harder and reduce cooling. If the window does not seal well around the kit, use foam weatherstripping along the gaps to keep hot air out. For a double-hung window, the kit usually goes in the lower half. For a sliding window, the kit can be turned 90 degrees to fit vertically.

    If you have to leave a small gap around the window kit, stuff a folded towel into the opening. Every gap of warm outdoor air entering the room makes the AC work harder for the same cooling result.

    Plug Into the Wall Directly, Not an Extension Cord

    Portable air conditioners draw between 900 and 1,500 watts when the compressor is running. That is too much for most extension cords, which can overheat and start a fire when used with high-watt appliances. Plug the unit directly into a wall outlet. If the cord does not reach, use a heavy-duty grounded extension cord rated for 15 amps, with the cord fully unrolled so it does not coil and heat up. Better still, hire an electrician to add an outlet closer to where you want the unit. The wall outlet itself should be a three-prong grounded type, ideally with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI, if it is on a bathroom or kitchen circuit. Touch the cord every hour during the first day of use. If it feels hot, unplug the unit and call an electrician to check the outlet. Most modern portable ACs also have a Leakage Current Detection and Interruption, or LCDI, plug. If it trips, press the reset button. If it trips again, do not keep resetting. Have the unit checked by an authorized service center.

    Warning

    Never plug a portable air conditioner into a power strip, surge protector, or a long thin extension cord. Power strips are not rated for the current draw and have started many house fires.

    Set the Temperature and Fan Mode

    Turn on the unit using the power button on the top panel or the remote. Set the mode to Cool. Use the up and down arrows or temperature dial to choose your target room temperature; 76 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended by the Department of Energy for seniors who want to save money without sacrificing comfort. Lower temperatures cost more on the electric bill and can make the unit run nonstop without ever reaching the setting in a room that is too large. Set the fan speed to High for the first 30 minutes to cool the room quickly, then drop it to Medium or Auto. Most units have a timer button. Set it to turn off after eight hours of sleep. So you do not run the unit all day after you wake up and leave the room. The Dry or Dehumidify mode removes humidity without strong cooling, useful for mild but muggy days. The Fan-only mode moves air without cooling and uses much less electricity.

    Pair the portable AC with a ceiling fan or a small box fan on low. Moving air feels four degrees cooler on skin than still air. So you can set the AC a few degrees higher and still feel comfortable.

    Drain the Water Tank on a Schedule

    Portable air conditioners pull moisture out of the air as they cool, and that water collects in an internal tank or runs out through a drain hose. Some self-evaporating models recycle the water through the exhaust hose with little manual draining; most do not. Check the user manual for your specific model. Most non-evaporating models have a drain plug near the bottom rear of the unit. Once or twice a week during humid weather, place a shallow tray under the drain plug, pull the plug, and let the water drain out into the tray. Empty the tray into a sink. If the unit has a Full Tank light or beep, drain the water as soon as the indicator triggers. Otherwise the unit will shut off until you drain it, often during a hot afternoon. For continuous draining, attach a garden hose to the drain port and run it to a floor drain or out the window to a planter. Do not let the drain hose loop upward, which prevents water from running out.

    Warning

    Standing water in the internal tank can grow mold within a few weeks. Drain the tank fully at the end of every cooling season, and run the unit in Fan mode for an hour to dry the interior before storage.

    Clean or Replace the Filter Every Two Weeks

    The filter is a small mesh or pleated panel located behind a grille on the side or back of the unit. Pull it out gently every two weeks during the cooling season. Vacuum off the dust with the soft brush attachment, then rinse under lukewarm water and let it air-dry fully before reinstalling. A clogged filter cuts cooling power by 20 to 30 percent and forces the compressor to work harder, raising the electric bill and shortening the life of the unit. While the filter is out, check the inside coil for dust buildup and gently wipe it with a damp cloth. Some newer models have a Filter Clean light that turns on after a set number of hours. Reset the light by holding the button shown in the manual. Replace the filter entirely once a year, or sooner if it tears. Replacement filters cost five to fifteen dollars and are listed by model number on the maker's website.

    Pets, smokers, and homes near construction sites need more frequent filter cleaning, often weekly. A dusty filter is the most common reason a portable AC seems to lose cooling power after a year.

    Watch for Carbon Monoxide and Other Warning Signs

    Portable air conditioners themselves do not produce carbon monoxide, but during a heat wave many seniors run a portable AC alongside a gas stove, gas water heater, or backup generator, and a fuel-burning device that is not vented correctly can release carbon monoxide into the home. Install a carbon monoxide alarm on every floor and outside every sleeping area, replacing batteries twice a year. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion that improves when you go outside. If the alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 from a neighbor's phone. Other AC warning signs include strange burning smells, loud rattling, water leaking from anywhere other than the drain, ice forming on the coils, or breakers that trip when you turn the unit on. Unplug the unit and call the manufacturer's service line. The model and serial number are on a sticker on the back of the unit.

    Warning

    Never run a fuel-powered generator inside the home, in the garage, or near an open window. The exhaust contains carbon monoxide that can kill within minutes in an enclosed space.
