An uninterruptible power supply, known by the short name UPS, is a small battery in a plastic case that sits between a wall outlet and the equipment you want to keep running. When the power is on, electricity flows from the outlet through the UPS to your devices, and the battery inside stays charged. When the power goes out, the UPS keeps the equipment running for several minutes to several hours, depending on the size of the battery and what is plugged in. The switch from wall power to battery happens so fast (in a tenth of a second) that the devices never know the lights went out. The screen stays on, the wifi stays on, the medical device stays on. And you have time to either ride out a short outage or shut things down safely if the outage will be long.
For a rural senior, a UPS solves three real problems. First, it keeps the home wifi router and the satellite or fixed wireless modem running during a brief outage, so video calls and telehealth visits do not drop. Second, it keeps small medical devices (oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, insulin pumps, electric medical beds with breath sensors) working long enough to call for help or move to a backup. Third, it gives a desktop computer time to save documents and shut down properly, preventing lost files. A UPS is not a generator and cannot run the refrigerator, the furnace, or the well pump. For those you need a much bigger generator or a portable power station. But for the small devices that matter most, a UPS at $80 to $200 is one of the best safety investments a country home can make.
UPS units come in three common sizes for home use. A 350 VA to 600 VA model is the smallest, costs $60 to $100, and runs a wifi router and a desk lamp for 30 to 60 minutes. A 900 VA to 1500 VA model is mid-sized, costs $130 to $220, and can run a desktop computer, a router, a monitor, and a CPAP for two to four hours. A 2000 VA to 3000 VA model is the largest home size, costs $250 to $500, and can run a small office or a medical setup for several hours. Pick the size based on what you want to run, not by guessing big. The label on the back of any device shows the wattage. Add the wattages together and pick a UPS with at least 1.5 times that total.
Good brands include APC, CyberPower, Tripp Lite, and Eaton. All four make models you can buy from Amazon, Best Buy, Lowe's, Home Depot, or Staples. Avoid no-name brands; the batteries inside are often poor quality and may fail in two years. The good brands list a real wattage on the box and offer a one-year to three-year warranty. Once you choose a model, the rest of the setup is simple: charge the unit, plug devices into the battery-backed outlets, and check it twice a year.
