Social media accounts are often set to share more than you realize. Your posts, photos, friends list, location, and personal details may be visible to anyone on the internet — not only your friends and family. Taking a few minutes to adjust your privacy settings can significantly reduce what strangers can see.

Facebook: Go to Settings and Privacy, then Settings, then Privacy. Under "Who can see your future posts?" change it from "Public" to "Friends." Under "Who can send you friend requests?" choose "Friends of friends." Under "Who can look you up by email/phone?" change to "Friends." Also go to your Profile, tap the three dots, then "View As" to see what your profile looks like to the public.

Review your past posts: Settings then Privacy then "Limit Past Posts" applies the "Friends only" setting to all your previous posts that were set to Public or Friends of Friends. This is a powerful one-click change.

Instagram: Go to Settings then Privacy then "Private Account" and turn it on. When your account is private, only people you approve as followers can see your posts, stories, and followers list. Your profile photo and bio are still visible to everyone.

Twitter/X: Go to Settings then Privacy and Safety then "Protect your posts." When turned on, only your followers can see your tweets, and new followers require your approval.

General tips for all platforms: review your friends or followers list periodically and remove people you do not know. Turn off location tagging on posts (this reveals where you are in real time). Be cautious about sharing personal details like your full birth date, home address, phone number, or travel plans.

Check your tagged photos: on most platforms, you can review tags before they appear on your profile. Facebook: Settings then Profile and Tagging then "Review tags people add to your posts before they appear" then turn on. Instagram: Settings then Privacy then Tags then "Manually Approve Tags" then turn on.
