    How to Learn Touch Typing

Type faster and more accurately without looking at the keyboard. It's never too late to learn.

    1

    Why learn to type?

    ~15s
Touch typing (typing without looking at the keyboard) saves enormous time. Average hunt-and-peck speed is 20-30 words per minute. Touch typists average 60-80+ WPM. It also reduces neck strain from looking down.
    2

    Home row position

    ~15s
Place your left fingers on A, S, D, F and right fingers on J, K, L, ;. Your index fingers rest on F and J (the keys with bumps). All other keys are reached from this position.
    3

    Free typing practice sites

    ~15s
TypingClub.com: structured lessons from basics to advanced. Keybr.com: AI-powered practice that focuses on your weak spots. Both are free and work in any browser.
    4

    Practice 15 minutes daily

    ~15s
Short, consistent practice is better than long, infrequent sessions. Set a daily reminder. Focus on accuracy first — speed comes naturally with practice.
    5

    Don't look at the keyboard

    ~15s
This is the hardest part. You will be slower at first. Resist the urge to look down. Cover your hands with a towel if needed. After 2-3 weeks, muscle memory takes over.
    6

    Track your progress

    ~15s
Test your speed weekly at typing.com/student/tests. Watch your WPM increase over time. Most people double their speed within a month of daily practice.
