    1

Download Lyft and create an account

    ~24s
Find "Lyft" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and install the free app. Open it and tap "Get Started." Enter your mobile phone number — Lyft will text you a 4-digit code to verify it is yours. Then enter your name and email address to complete registration. Your account is now ready and your trip history, payment, and safety contacts will all be stored under this account.
    2

    Add your payment method

    ~33s
Tap the profile icon in the top corner of the app and go to "Payment." Tap "Add Payment Method" and enter your credit or debit card number, expiration date, and security code. Lyft also accepts PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Once added, your payment information is stored securely — you will never need to hand over money or a card inside a Lyft vehicle. The charge appears on your statement after the ride ends.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Some health insurance plans and Medicare Advantage programs cover non-emergency medical transportation through Lyft. Ask your insurance provider if this benefit is included in your plan.

    3

    Request a ride

    ~24s
From the main screen, tap "Where are you going?" and type your destination. Lyft will show available ride types and estimated prices for each one. Lyft Standard is displayed first and is the most common choice. You can see both the estimated price and estimated arrival time for each option. Tap "Confirm Lyft" (or whichever ride type you selected) to send the request — a driver will accept within seconds in most areas.
    4

    Use the safety features

    ~40s
While waiting for or riding in your Lyft, tap the shield icon on the ride screen to access safety tools. "Share Trip" lets you send a live link to a family member or friend so they can watch your ride on a map in real time — they do not need a Lyft account to view it. There is also a "Call 911" shortcut that dials emergency services and shares your GPS location with the operator. You can also report a safety issue directly to Lyft through this menu.

    Warning

Always verify the driver's name, photo, and license plate before entering the vehicle. Lyft shows all three on the pickup screen. If any detail does not match, do not get in — cancel the ride and request a new one.

    5

    Cancel a ride if needed

    ~28s
If you need to cancel a ride, tap the "X" button on the ride status screen immediately — canceling within 2 minutes of the driver accepting is usually free. If you wait longer and the driver is already on the way, Lyft charges a small cancellation fee (typically $2 to $5) to compensate the driver for their time. Once the driver arrives, no cancellation fee applies if you decide not to get in — you are charged only if you cancel after a certain window has passed.

Lyft is a rideshare service very similar to Uber — you use a smartphone app to request a ride, a nearby driver picks you up in their own car, and you are charged automatically through the app. Both services are available in most US cities and work around the clock. Many people have accounts with both apps and use whichever shows a shorter wait time or lower price on a given day.

Lyft has a few features that make it popular, particularly with people who value safety. Every trip includes real-time tracking, and Lyft lets you share your trip status — including a live map and the driver's name — with a friend or family member. There is also an in-app safety button that connects you to 911 directly from the ride screen.

Lyft offers several ride types depending on your needs. Lyft Standard is the everyday affordable option — usually a sedan or small SUV. Lyft XL fits up to 6 passengers and is good for groups or when you are carrying large items. Lyft Lux is a higher-end option with luxury vehicles. Lyft Assisted pairs you with a driver who has been trained in helping passengers with mobility needs.

The Lyft Pass program is worth knowing about if you ride frequently — it lets employers, healthcare providers, and some senior programs offer discounted or prepaid rides to specific groups of people. If someone has set up a Lyft Pass for you, you will receive a code to enter in the app that automatically applies discounts.

This guide covers creating your Lyft account, requesting a ride, the key safety features, and how to cancel a ride if you need to.
