How to Clean Up Your Online Accounts

Delete old accounts, reduce your digital footprint, and manage your online presence.

    1

    Find your old accounts

    ~15s
Search your email for "welcome to," "verify your email," or "thanks for signing up." You'll find hundreds of accounts you've forgotten. Make a list of ones you want to keep and ones to delete.
    2

    Delete unused accounts

    ~15s
Visit justdelete.me for direct links to account deletion pages for hundreds of services. Log in and follow the deletion process. Some make it easy, others deliberately make it difficult.
    3

    Unsubscribe from email lists

    ~15s
Use Unroll.me (free) to see all your email subscriptions in one place. Unsubscribe from ones you never read with one click. You'll be amazed how many lists you're on.
    4

    Check data brokers

    ~15s
Sites like Spokeo, WhitePages, and BeenVerified sell your personal information. Visit each and opt out. Or use a service like DeleteMe ($129/year) that does it for you continuously.
    5

    Review connected apps

    ~15s
Google: myaccount.google.com > Security > Third-party apps. Apple: Settings > Apple ID > Sign-In & Security > Apps Using Apple ID. Remove apps you no longer use from accessing your accounts.
    6

    Google yourself

    ~15s
Search your full name in quotes. See what appears publicly. Request removal of personal information from Google: support.google.com/websearch > Remove information. Review and clean up old social media posts.
    7

    Ongoing maintenance

    ~15s
Set a reminder every 6 months to review and clean up accounts. Use a password manager to track all your accounts. Think twice before creating new accounts — does this service truly need one?
