Passkeys Explained: The Future of Passwords

Understand passkeys — the new, more secure way to sign into websites and apps.

    1

    What are passkeys?

    ~15s
Passkeys replace passwords with biometric authentication (fingerprint or face scan). Instead of typing a password, you verify with your face or fingerprint. No password to remember, steal, or phish.

    How they work

    ~15s
When you create a passkey, your device generates a unique cryptographic key pair. The private key stays on your device (never shared). Logging in uses your biometrics to unlock this key. No password ever crosses the internet.
    3

    Why they're more secure

    ~15s
Can't be phished — there's no password to type on a fake website. Can't be stolen in data breaches — the key only exists on your device. Can't be guessed — there's no password to brute-force.

    Who supports passkeys?

    ~15s
Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, PayPal, eBay, Best Buy, Kayak, and hundreds more. The list grows weekly. Check passkeys.directory for a complete list of supporting sites.
    5

How to set up a passkey

    ~15s
When a website offers passkeys: go to account settings > security > create passkey. Your device prompts for Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint. Done. Next login, just verify your identity biometrically.
    6

    What about my existing passwords?

    ~15s
Passkeys supplement passwords — you can use both. Start creating passkeys for important accounts (email, banking) while keeping passwords as backup. Your password manager syncs passkeys across devices.
