How to Set Up and Use a Password Manager

Stop reusing passwords. A password manager creates and remembers strong passwords for every account.

    1

    Why you need one

    ~15s
The average person has 100+ online accounts. Reusing passwords means one breach exposes them all. A password manager creates unique, strong passwords for every site and remembers them for you.
    2

    Choose a password manager

    ~15s
Free options: Bitwarden (best free), Apple iCloud Keychain (Apple devices), Google Password Manager (Chrome). Paid: 1Password ($2.99/month) and Dashlane ($4.99/month) with extra features.
    3

    Create your master password

    ~15s
This is the ONE password you'll memorize. Make it long and memorable: a phrase like "My-dog-Max-loves-pizza-42!" is strong and easy to remember. Write it down and store it somewhere safe.
    4

    Install the browser extension

    ~15s
Install your password manager's browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). It automatically offers to save passwords when you log into websites and fills them in next time.
    5

    Import existing passwords

    ~15s
Most password managers can import passwords from your browser. Go to Settings > Import and follow the steps. Your existing saved passwords transfer automatically.
    6

    Generate strong passwords

    ~15s
When creating new accounts, click the password manager icon to generate a random, strong password. It saves it automatically. You never need to remember it.
    7

    Use it on your phone

    ~15s
Download the password manager app on your phone. Enable autofill: iPhone (Settings > Passwords > AutoFill), Android (Settings > Autofill). Passwords sync across all your devices.
