How to Choose the Right Printer

Inkjet vs laser, single vs multifunction, and how to avoid expensive ink traps.

    1

    Inkjet vs laser

    ~15s
Inkjet: better for photos and color printing, cheaper printers but expensive ink. Laser: better for text documents, faster printing, much cheaper per page. For most homes: laser is the smarter long-term choice.

    The ink trap

    ~15s
Some inkjet printers cost $50 but replacement ink costs $60+. Check ink/toner costs before buying. Look for printers with tank systems (EcoTank, MegaTank) that cost $0.01-$0.02 per page instead of $0.10+.

    Recommended printers

    ~15s
Budget laser: Brother HL-L2350DW (~$120, mono). Color laser: Brother HL-L3270CDW (~$250). Budget inkjet with cheap ink: Epson EcoTank ET-2800 (~$200, tank system). Photo printing: Canon PIXMA G620 (~$250).
    4

    Multifunction printers

    ~15s
MFPs combine printing, scanning, and copying in one device. Good if you need all three. Brother MFC-L2750DW (~$200) is excellent for home offices.
    5

    Wireless printing is essential

    ~15s
All modern printers should connect via Wi-Fi. This lets you print from your phone, tablet, or any computer on the network. AirPrint (Apple) and Mopria (Android) enable phone printing.
    6

    Consider not owning one

    ~15s
If you print less than 50 pages/month, consider printing at the library (often free), FedEx/UPS Store, or Staples. Many people save money by not owning a printer at all.
