How to Open, Read, and Save PDF Files on Your Phone

PDFs are commonly used for medical forms, bank statements, instruction manuals, and more. Here is how to open, read, zoom in on, and save PDFs on iPhone and Android.

    1

    Open a PDF on iPhone

    ~39s
If a PDF link appears in Safari: tap the link and the PDF opens directly in Safari with a built-in viewer. Tap the share icon (box with arrow pointing up) → "Save to Files" to save it for future access. If someone emails you a PDF in the Mail app: tap the attachment and it opens in a preview. Tap the share icon to save it or open with another app. PDFs saved to your phone are accessible in the Files app under "On My iPhone" or "iCloud Drive."

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Pinch to zoom in on any PDF for easier reading. If the text is still small, try rotating your phone to landscape (sideways) — the PDF fills the wider screen.

    2

    Open a PDF on Android

    ~27s
If you tap a PDF link in Chrome, it opens in a built-in PDF viewer. Tap the three-dot menu to save or share it. If someone emails you a PDF in Gmail: tap the attachment icon → tap "Preview" to view in Google Drive's PDF viewer, or tap the download icon to save it to your phone. PDFs saved to your phone appear in the Files app under "Downloads" or you can find them by opening the Google Drive app and tapping "Files."
    3

Fill in and sign PDF forms

    ~37s
Many PDFs from doctors, government agencies, and businesses require you to fill in information and sign. For this, download the free "Adobe Acrobat Reader" app from your app store. Open any PDF in the app. Tap a form field to type in it. For signatures: tap the pen icon → "Fill & Sign" → draw or type your signature. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free for these basic functions — paid features are optional and rarely needed for everyday document tasks.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: On iPhone, you can also sign PDFs using the built-in Markup tool. Open the PDF → tap the share icon → "Markup" → tap the signature button (pen on paper) → draw your signature.

    4

Save and organize your PDF documents

    ~28s
Create a folder for important PDFs to keep them organized. On iPhone: open the Files app → tap the three-dot menu → "New Folder" → name it "Medical Records" or "Insurance" or whatever makes sense. On Android: in the Files app, tap the + button → "New Folder." Move PDFs into these folders by long-pressing the file → "Move to." For important documents you want accessible anywhere, save them to iCloud Drive (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android) so they sync across all your devices.

PDF (Portable Document Format) files are a standard way to share documents that look the same on every device — medical forms, bank statements, insurance documents, instruction manuals, and more. When someone emails you a PDF or you download one from a website, you need to know how to open and read it.

Both iPhone and Android can open PDFs without any additional apps. iPhone uses a built-in viewer whenever you tap a PDF link. Android phones with Google Drive installed can open PDFs directly. For advanced features like filling in forms, signing PDFs, or annotating, a dedicated app like Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) is the most widely used option.

This guide covers the basics for both phones.
