How to Safely Recycle Old Electronics

Properly dispose of old phones, computers, and gadgets while protecting your data.

    1

    Wipe your data first

    ~15s
iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content. Android: Settings > General > Reset > Factory Reset. Computer: reset Windows or reinstall macOS. ALWAYS wipe before recycling.
    2

    Sign out of accounts

    ~15s
Before wiping: sign out of iCloud, Google, and any other accounts. Deauthorize the device from services like iTunes. Remove SIM cards and memory cards.
    3

    Trade-in programs

    ~15s
Apple Trade In: get credit toward a new device. Samsung Trade-In: similar program. Amazon Trade-In: get gift cards. Best Buy: trade in for store credit. Check all before recycling — your old device may be worth $50-200+.
    4

    Manufacturer recycling

    ~15s
Apple, Samsung, Dell, HP, and most manufacturers accept old devices for free recycling. Visit their websites for mail-in labels or drop-off locations. They recycle responsibly.
    5

    Retailer drop-off

    ~15s
Best Buy accepts most electronics for free recycling (up to 3 items per day). Staples accepts some electronics. Many cell phone stores accept old phones regardless of brand.
    6

Don't throw electronics in the trash

    ~15s
Electronics contain lead, mercury, and other toxic materials. Throwing them in the garbage contaminates landfills and groundwater. E-waste recycling recovers valuable materials and prevents pollution.
