Selling an old phone, tablet, or laptop is a great way to offset the cost of a new one — and it keeps working electronics out of landfills. But if you hand over a device without properly erasing it first, you risk exposing photos, passwords, email accounts, banking apps, and personal documents to a stranger.
The good news: all modern devices have a built-in factory reset that erases everything and restores the device to brand-new condition. Done correctly, a factory reset makes it impossible for the next owner to access your old data.
Where to sell:
Apple trade-in (apple.com/shop/trade-in) and Samsung trade-in programs are the simplest — no strangers, guaranteed payment. Best Buy, Target, and Gazelle also buy used devices. For more money, try eBay, Swappa, or Facebook Marketplace — but these require shipping or meeting a stranger, so take precautions.
What you will get:
A 2–3 year old iPhone might sell for $100–$300 depending on condition and model. Android phones vary widely. Laptops 2–4 years old can sell for $100–$400.
Always back up your data before erasing. Remove SIM cards and SD cards. Charge the battery before selling.
