    Astrophotography With A Smartphone: Stellarium, NightCap, Lunar Pictures

    Modern phones photograph the moon, bright planets, and constellations without a separate camera. Three free apps cover most of it.

    Set up the phone on a steady tripod

    A phone in hand at night produces nothing but a blur. A 25-dollar phone tripod from Amazon with a phone clamp solves the problem. The Manfrotto PIXI Mini, the UBeesize 51-inch, and the Joby GorillaPod Mobile are common starter tripods. Set the tripod on solid ground and clamp the phone in landscape orientation. Turn on the 3-second self-timer so pressing the shutter does not shake the camera.

    Shoot the moon with the native camera app

    On a clear night with the moon up, point the tripod-mounted phone at the moon. Tap and hold on the moon in the viewfinder. The phone locks focus and exposure. Drag the brightness slider down by 1 to 2 stops until the moon shows as a textured surface, not a white blob. Zoom in 2x or 3x using the optical zoom on the lens, not digital zoom. Press the shutter. The result is a usable, sharable photo of the moon. Avoid digital zoom past the lens limit, which is 2x on most iPhones and up to 5x on Pixel phones with the telephoto lens.

    Install NightCap on iPhone for the night sky and ISS

    On iPhone, open the App Store and search NightCap Camera. The app costs 3 dollars. Open NightCap and tap the star icon. Pick Stars mode for star trails, ISS mode to record the International Space Station as a streak, or Meteor mode for meteor showers. Set the exposure to about 8 to 15 seconds. The app stacks the frames automatically. On Android, install Camera FV-5 free and switch to manual mode with a 15 to 30 second shutter and ISO 1600.

    Use a phone-to-eyepiece adapter for the moon at high power

    Order a Celestron NexYZ 3-Axis Smartphone Adapter or a SVBONY universal phone adapter from celestron.com, highpointscientific.com, or Amazon, for 30 to 60 dollars. The adapter clamps onto the eyepiece of any telescope and holds the phone above it on three adjustable axes. Center the moon in the eyepiece by eye. Clip the phone on, slide the X and Y axes until the moon appears on the phone screen, and adjust the Z axis until the moon fills the frame. Tap to focus, adjust brightness down, and press the shutter. The technique is called afocal photography and produces sharp craters and lunar mountains.

    Use Stellarium to find any target before pointing

    Open Stellarium Mobile on the phone before opening the camera. Search for the target by name, such as Jupiter or Andromeda Galaxy or ISS. Stellarium shows where it is in the current sky and at what altitude and direction. Note the azimuth and altitude. Aim the camera or telescope in that direction. This step removes the most common new-user mistake of pointing at the wrong star.     Warning

    Important: Never point a phone camera at the Sun without a certified solar filter, even briefly. The phone sensor can be damaged and so can the photographer eye through the screen reflection.

    A smartphone is now a usable astrophotography camera for several common targets. The moon, the bright planets through a telescope, the constellations on a dark night, the International Space Station, and even the bright nebulae are within reach of an iPhone 12 or newer and most flagship Android phones. The hobby is called smartphone astrophotography, and the gear list is short: the phone, a free app or two, a tripod, and optionally a small adapter that clamps the phone to a telescope eyepiece. A senior who already owns the phone can start tonight for about 40 dollars.

    Three free or low-cost apps cover almost every shot. The first is Stellarium Mobile, a free planetarium app at stellarium.org. Stellarium tells the user exactly where any target will be in the sky at any time, which removes the guesswork of pointing the camera. The second is NightCap Camera on iPhone, at nightcapcamera.com, which costs 3 dollars and adds long-exposure modes for stars, star trails, satellites, the ISS, meteor showers, and the aurora. Android users can install Camera FV-5 or the free version of ProCam X for the same long-exposure features. The third is the phones own native camera app in Night Mode. Modern iPhone Night mode and Google Pixel Astrophotography mode automatically stack a four-minute exposure of a starry sky into a clean image. The Pixel mode requires a tripod and recognizes the dark sky on its own. The iPhone Night mode runs up to 30 seconds on a tripod.

    The moon is the easiest target. A full or gibbous moon photographed with a regular phone on a tripod, zoomed in 2x or 3x, produces a sharp image with visible craters. A phone clipped to a telescope eyepiece with a 30-dollar Celestron NexYZ adapter produces National Geographic-quality moon photos at any phase. The technique is called afocal photography. The user lines up the phone camera with the eyepiece, taps the screen to focus on the moon, and presses the shutter. Bright planets like Jupiter and Saturn are harder because they are smaller in the field. They show as a clear disk through a telescope eyepiece, but the phone records them as a bright dot unless the magnification is at least 100x. Constellations, the Milky Way, and meteor showers are best shot with the phone alone on a tripod with NightCap or Night mode.
