The American Contract Bridge League is the governing body for organized bridge in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. It has about 165,000 members, runs three national championships a year, and sanctions roughly 3,200 local clubs. Membership is not required to play bridge socially or to take an intro class. A sanctioned club is one that runs ACBL-rated games, which means the results are reported back to headquarters and masterpoints are awarded to the winners. Sanctioned clubs follow standard rules, use the official ACBL Convention Card, and pay a small per-table fee back to the league. Most clubs charge an entry of 8 to 14 dollars per session, which usually includes coffee and a snack. A typical session lasts three hours and covers 24 to 27 hands. Sessions run morning, afternoon, and evening at larger clubs. Senior pairs games, which are limited to players age 55 or older, are common on weekday mornings.
