Confirm whether the home state has an income tax

    ~23s
Open a browser and search the phrase does my state have an income tax for the state name. The nine no-tax states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, and as of 2026, New Hampshire on most income. Residents of those states file only the federal return. Everyone else has a state filing obligation and should look for a free state path.
    2

Visit the state department of revenue website

    ~30s
Open a browser and search the phrase Department of Revenue followed by the state name. Click only the result that ends in .gov to avoid copycat tax-help sites. Look for navigation labels such as e-File for Free, Free File, Direct File, or Online Services. Most state revenue sites place the free-file link near the top of the home page during tax season, roughly January through April.

    Warning

Important: Some commercial sites use names such as state-tax-free-file.com to imitate the real state government page. Always confirm the address ends in .gov before entering personal data.

    3

Try IRS Direct File if the state is supported

    ~30s
Open directfile.irs.gov. Type a ZIP code into the eligibility check. If the state is supported and the household income fits the supported forms, the wizard offers a guided federal interview. After IRS acceptance, the system offers a state hand-off button that pre-fills the state return on the state revenue site. The two systems share data securely with the taxpayer's consent.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Direct File supports Social Security, retirement distributions, and the Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled in the 2026 tax year, which fits most senior returns.

    4

Check the state Free File Alliance list

    ~22s
Several states partner with the same software brands that participate in IRS Free File. The state revenue page lists the partners, the income limits, and the state-specific eligibility rules. Some partners require the user to start at the state portal, not the IRS portal, to qualify for the free state return. Read the start-point instructions carefully on the state page before launching the partner site.
    5

Save and print the state acceptance email

    ~29s
State e-file acceptance arrives by email within 24 to 72 hours of the filing. Save the email in a folder labeled Tax Returns 2026. Print the federal and state acceptance confirmations and place them with the paper copy of the return. A future loan application, a homestead exemption renewal, or a Medicaid application years from now may request proof of a filed state return, and the printed confirmation is the easiest evidence. Source pages include directfile.irs.gov and the state department of revenue website for each state.

Most states with a personal income tax run a free state e-file program for residents. The programs are easy to miss because the IRS Free File portal advertises only federal returns and only some partners cover the state return free of charge. A senior who finishes a federal return through Free File, then learns that the same partner charges 30 dollars for the state return, can pause, save the federal return as a PDF, and finish the state return on the state government website at no cost. The state-level free programs are run by the state revenue department, sometimes under names such as Direct File, MyTax, Free Fillable Forms, or Free File Alliance. And they cover the same forms the state would mail in a paper booklet. Combined federal Free File and state direct-file can save a senior household 30 to 80 dollars per season compared with a paid product.

The nine states with no personal income tax do not run a free state program because there is nothing to file. Those states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. New Hampshire taxes only interest and dividends and has phased that out, so most retirees there file nothing. Every other state with a tax runs at least one free e-file path for residents whose returns are not too complex. California offers CalFile. New York offers Direct File and Free File Alliance partners. Pennsylvania offers myPATH. Ohio offers OH-TAX. Michigan offers MIFastFile. The full list lives on each state's department of revenue or department of taxation website, usually with the words Free File or e-File File for Free in the navigation.

A federal pilot called IRS Direct File launched in 12 states in 2024, expanded to 25 states in 2025, and is expected to keep growing. Direct File is a free, government-run federal product, not a state product. But it includes one-click handoffs to participating state free-file systems in many states. A senior in a Direct File state can complete a federal return on IRS.gov and then transfer the data to the state product with no retyping. Direct File supports W-2 wages, Social Security, interest income, unemployment, and several common credits, and the supported scope expands every year. Source pages include directfile.irs.gov, the state department of revenue website for each state, and the IRS State Government Web Sites index at irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/state-government-websites.
