A WiFi router takes the internet connection from your modem (the device from your internet provider) and broadcasts it wirelessly throughout your home. Setting up a new router takes about 15-20 minutes.
Unplug your old router (if you have one). Plug an Ethernet cable from your modem into the router's WAN or Internet port (usually a different color from the other ports). Plug the router into a power outlet and turn it on. Wait 2-3 minutes for it to start up fully.
Most modern routers have a setup app. Check the router's packaging or quick-start guide for the app name (TP-Link Tether, Netgear Nighthawk, ASUS Router, Linksys, etc.). Download the app and follow the setup wizard.
During setup, you will create a WiFi network name (SSID) and password. Choose a name you will recognize (like "SmithFamily-WiFi") and a strong password that is at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Write these down and keep them somewhere safe — you will need the password to connect every device.
Place your router in a central location in your home, elevated if possible (on a shelf, not on the floor). Avoid placing it near thick walls, metal objects, mirrors, or microwaves, which can interfere with the signal. The more central the location, the more even the coverage throughout your home.
After setup, connect your devices: on each phone, computer, tablet, and smart TV, go to WiFi settings, select your new network name, and enter the password.
