Spotify Tips Most People Do Not Know About

Get more out of Spotify with these overlooked features: crossfade, private sessions, the sleep timer, and better queue management.

    1

    Turn on Crossfade

    ~25s
Open the Spotify app and tap the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner. Scroll down and tap "Playback." Find the "Crossfade" slider and drag it to the right to set how many seconds the songs should overlap. A setting of three to five seconds works well for most people.

    Quick Tip

Crossfade works best with albums or playlists where songs flow together. If you mostly listen to individual tracks at random, crossfade may feel odd during genre switches.

    2

    Start a Private Session

    ~20s
In the Spotify app, tap the gear icon (Settings). Near the top, tap "Social." Find "Private Session" and switch it on. The Spotify logo at the top of your screen will gain a small lock icon to confirm the session is private. Your listening during this time will not show up in your activity feed or affect your recommendations.
    3

    Set the Sleep Timer

    ~23s
While music or a podcast is playing, tap the song or episode name at the bottom of the screen to open the full player. Tap the three-dot menu (•••) at the top right. Scroll down and find "Sleep Timer." Tap it and choose how long you want Spotify to keep playing — 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or until the end of the current episode or track.

    Manage your Queue

    ~31s
While something is playing, tap the queue icon at the bottom-right of the player screen (it looks like three horizontal lines with a music note). You will see "Now Playing" at the top, then "Next in Queue," then "Next Up" from your current album or playlist. Tap and hold the lines next to any upcoming song to drag it to a different position in the queue. Swipe left on a song to remove it.

    Quick Tip

To add a song to play next without interrupting the current one, tap the three-dot menu next to any song and select "Add to queue."

    Explore Your Listening Stats

    ~21s
Tap the home icon, then tap "Made for You" playlists — these are generated based on your actual listening history. Spotify Wrapped (available each December) gives you a full summary of your year in music. For monthly stats, try visiting stats.fm in your phone's web browser — it is a free third-party tool that connects to your Spotify account and shows detailed listening data.

Spotify is packed with features that most people never discover because they are hidden in menus or settings screens. If you use Spotify regularly, knowing about these tools can make your listening experience noticeably better.

Crossfade is one of the most satisfying settings to turn on. Instead of a jarring silence between songs, Spotify gradually fades one song out while fading the next one in — creating a smooth, radio-like flow. You can set how many seconds the overlap lasts, from one second to twelve.

Private Session is useful when you want to listen to something without it affecting your listening history or your music recommendations — or appearing in your friends' "Friend Activity" feed if you have that turned on. A private session lasts until you close and reopen Spotify, or you can turn it off manually.

The Sleep Timer is perfect for falling asleep to music or a podcast. Set a time limit — 15, 30, or 45 minutes, or until the end of the current episode — and Spotify will stop playing automatically. You will not wake up to music that played all night.

The queue feature lets you control what plays next without interrupting what is playing right now. You can add songs to the end of your queue, reorder what is coming up, and remove things you no longer want to hear.

These features work on the Spotify app for iPhone and Android, and most also work in the desktop app for Mac and Windows. Some features require a Spotify Premium subscription, but most of what is described here works on the free version as well.
