    Touchscreen Not Responding to Taps — How to Fix It

    Clean your screen and dry your fingers

    Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the screen thoroughly. Make sure your fingers are dry — water, lotion, or hand cream on your fingertips prevents the screen from detecting your touch properly. Try tapping with a dry fingertip and see if the response improves.

    Check your screen protector

    If you use a plastic screen protector and it has started to bubble, peel, or separate at the edges, it can interfere with touch detection. Lift a corner and see if the screen responds better without it. If so, replace the screen protector with a new one.

    Remove your phone case

    Some thick phone cases put slight pressure on the edges of the screen, which can cause incorrect touch registration. Remove the case and test the screen directly.

    Restart the phone

    A software freeze or app crash can make the screen appear unresponsive when the hardware is actually fine. If you can, restart the phone using the physical power button.     Check if a specific area is unresponsive

    Open the Calculator app or any app with buttons spread across the screen and tap systematically across every part of the screen. If certain areas consistently don't respond (especially along the edges), this may show physical screen damage — either a crack that isn't fully visible or a loose internal connection.

    Update your software

    An iOS or Android update can fix bugs that affect touch sensitivity. Go to Settings > General > Software Update (iPhone) or Settings > System > Software Update (Android) and install any available updates.

    Warning

    If the screen has a visible crack running across it, it may have damaged the digitizer layer underneath that registers touch. In this case, the screen needs professional repair — a cracked screen does not always mean the entire phone is ruined.

    A touchscreen that doesn't respond to taps — or that responds in the wrong location — is one of the more unsettling phone problems because you use the screen for everything. But in the majority of cases, the fix is quick.

    The most common causes are moisture or lotion on the screen, a screen protector that has started to peel up at the edges, a software freeze, or — in some cases — a cracked screen. The first three are easy to check and fix yourself.

    Touchscreens work by detecting tiny electrical changes when your finger touches the glass. Anything that interferes with that electrical signal — water, oil, a peeling protector, or a heavy case that presses on the edges — can cause erratic or absent responses.
