    Check the requirements

    ~22s
Universal Clipboard works automatically if your devices are set up correctly. You need: (1) the same Apple ID signed in on both devices — check under Settings > [your name] on iPhone and System Settings > Apple ID on Mac; (2) Bluetooth turned on on both devices; (3) Wi-Fi turned on on both devices; (4) Handoff enabled (see the Apple Handoff guide for how to turn this on).

    Copy something on your iPhone

    ~28s
Find some text on your iPhone — for example, open the Notes app and type a sentence, or find a phone number in your Contacts. Press and hold on the text until the selection handles appear, then tap "Copy." Nothing will look different on your screen, but the text is now on your clipboard and will be available on your nearby Mac for about two minutes.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can also copy a photo from the Photos app by tapping the Share button and choosing "Copy."

    Paste it on your Mac

    ~22s
On your Mac, open any app where you want to paste — for example, a TextEdit document, a browser address bar, or a Pages document. Click where you want the text to appear, then press Command + V (the standard Mac paste shortcut). The text you copied on your iPhone will appear. You might see a brief clipboard icon near your menu bar while it syncs.

Copy on your Mac and paste on iPhone

    ~32s
The same process works in reverse. On your Mac, select any text or image and press Command + C to copy it. Then, on your iPhone, tap where you want to paste — in Notes, Messages, Mail, or any other app — and tap "Paste." The Mac content will appear. Make sure both devices are close together and that you paste within about two minutes of copying.

    Warning

If pasting does not work across devices, make sure both have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on, both are awake (not asleep), and both are signed into the same Apple ID.

Universal Clipboard is one of those features that sounds almost too convenient to be real — but it works. When you copy something on your iPhone, it becomes available to paste on your nearby Mac within a few seconds. The same works in reverse: copy text or an image on your Mac, and you can paste it on your iPhone.

This is useful in many everyday situations. Say you receive a verification code in a text message on your iPhone — you can copy it there and paste it directly into a website on your Mac. Or you might want to copy a long email address from your Mac and paste it into a form on your iPhone. Without Universal Clipboard, you would have to retype it or email it to yourself.

Universal Clipboard is part of Apple's "Continuity" features — a group of tools designed to make your Apple devices work together smoothly. It requires all devices to be signed in to the same iCloud (Apple ID) account, to have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on, and to be within about 30 feet of each other.

The clipboard content is available for a short window — about two minutes after you copy something. After that, the cross-device access expires and each device returns to its own clipboard. This is a security feature to prevent old copied data from accidentally appearing on another device later.

Universal Clipboard works with text, images, photos, and even some file types. It has been available since iOS 10 and macOS Sierra (2016).
