Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu

    ~20s
Open Google Chrome on your computer. In the top right corner, look for the three vertical dots (⋮). Click it. If Chrome needs an update, you'll see a colored circle (green, yellow, or red) on this button — that's Chrome's visual signal that an update is waiting. If there's no colored circle, Chrome is up to date.
    2

Click Help > About Google Chrome

    ~16s
In the menu that drops down, hover over "Help" near the bottom of the list, then click "About Google Chrome." This opens the About page and automatically checks for updates at the same time. You'll see your current Chrome version number and a status message.
    3

Install the update if one is available

    ~21s
If an update is available, you'll see a blue button labeled "Update Google Chrome." Click it. The update downloads and installs in the background — it usually takes 10 to 20 seconds. When it's done, you'll see a button that says "Relaunch." Click Relaunch to restart Chrome with the update applied. Chrome will reopen to the same pages you had open.
    4

Confirm you're on the latest version

    ~20s
After relaunching, go back to the About page (three-dot menu > Help > About Google Chrome). It should now say "Google Chrome is up to date" along with your version number. If you're curious, you can also search "what is the current version of Chrome" — Google will show the current version number at the top of results.

On iPhone or iPad — update through the App Store

    ~25s
Chrome on iPhone and iPad updates through the App Store, not through Chrome itself. Open the App Store, tap your profile picture in the top right, and scroll down to see pending updates. If Chrome is listed, tap "Update" next to it. Or tap "Update All" to update all your apps at once. To turn on automatic app updates: go to Settings > App Store and turn on "App Updates."

Google releases updates for Chrome frequently — sometimes every few weeks. Most of these updates include security fixes that protect you from the latest browser vulnerabilities, phishing tricks, and malware techniques. Running an outdated version of Chrome means those protections aren't in place.

The good news is that Chrome is designed to update itself automatically. If you leave Chrome open and running in the background, it usually updates on its own and you never have to think about it. But if you close Chrome completely every time you're done using it, automatic updates may not have had a chance to install. In that case, you need to update manually.

You can tell Chrome needs an update by looking at the three-dot menu button in the top right corner of the browser. If it shows a colored circle — green, yellow, or red — Chrome is ready to update. Green means a minor update is available. Yellow means it's been a few days since the update was ready. Red means it's been over a week and the update is important to install.

The update process takes less than 30 seconds and you don't lose anything — your bookmarks, passwords, and history all stay exactly as they were.
