Venmo is a mobile payment app owned by PayPal for sending and receiving money from friends and family. It is free for personal payments from your bank account or Venmo balance. Download Venmo from the App Store or Google Play Store, create an account, and link a bank account or debit card.

Critical privacy setting: By default, Venmo makes your transactions visible to friends and sometimes the public. Change this immediately. Go to Settings, then Privacy, and change your default setting to "Private." This hides transactions from everyone except you and the recipient.

To send money, tap "Pay or Request," search for the person by username, phone, or email, enter the amount and a note, and tap "Pay." Use bank account or debit card to avoid fees (credit cards charge 3%).

When you receive money, it goes to your Venmo balance. Transfer it to your bank account — standard transfers (1-3 days) are free, instant transfers cost 1.75%. Enable PIN or biometric login in Settings, then Security for extra protection.

Only use Venmo with people you know. Never use it to pay strangers for online purchases. If someone you do not know sends you money, do not spend it — it may be a scam involving a stolen card.
