How to Use VoiceOver on iPhone (Screen Reader)

VoiceOver reads everything on your iPhone screen aloud — designed for blind and low-vision users, but helpful for anyone with tired eyes.

    1

    Turn on VoiceOver

    ~15s
Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then VoiceOver, and flip the switch on. A warning will explain that gestures will change — tap OK to continue.
    2

    Learn the basic gestures

    ~15s
Single-tap anything to hear its name read aloud. Double-tap anywhere on the screen to activate whatever VoiceOver last spoke. Swipe right or left with one finger to move between items.
    3

    Practice with the built-in tutorial

    ~15s
In the VoiceOver settings screen, tap VoiceOver Practice. This gives you a safe area to try gestures — the phone will tell you what each gesture does without actually doing it.
    4

    Adjust the speaking speed

    ~15s
Back in VoiceOver settings, drag the Speaking Rate slider. Start slower until you get used to hearing the voice, then speed up as you get more comfortable.
    5

    Set a triple-click shortcut

    ~15s
Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Accessibility Shortcut at the bottom, and pick VoiceOver. Now you can triple-click the side button to turn VoiceOver on or off quickly.

VoiceOver is Apple's built-in screen reader for iPhone and iPad. When it is on, the phone speaks whatever your finger touches — button names, text messages, web pages — so you can use the phone without looking at the screen.

VoiceOver changes how you interact with the phone: single-tap to hear an item, double-tap to activate it, and swipe with three fingers to scroll. It takes practice, but millions of blind and low-vision users rely on it every day.
