    Call 1-800-MEDICARE and request a Vietnamese interpreter

    Dial 1-800-633-4227 and wait for the English greeting. When the operator answers, say the word Vietnamese clearly. The operator will conference in a live Vietnamese interpreter at no cost to you. This service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The interpreter helps with enrollment questions, plan comparisons, claim status, and lost Medicare card replacements. Have your Medicare number ready. It is on your red, white, and blue Medicare card.

    Find your state SHIP and ask for a Vietnamese-speaking counselor

    Go to shiphelp.org and click Find Local Medicare Help. Enter your zip code. The site shows the SHIP office for your county along with a phone number. Call and ask: Do you have a counselor who speaks Vietnamese, or can you arrange one? In California, Texas, and Virginia the answer is usually yes within a few days. In smaller states, ask for an in-person or telephone appointment with a free interpreter — SHIP is required by federal funding rules to provide language access.

    Download the Vietnamese-language Medicare and You handbook

    The 100-page Medicare and You handbook is the official guide each beneficiary receives every fall. CMS publishes a Vietnamese translation as a PDF. Go to medicare.gov, search for Multi-language Documents, then look for Tiếng Việt. The handbook covers Original Medicare versus Medicare Advantage, prescription coverage, preventive screenings, and your appeal rights. Print the pages you want to read with your spouse or adult children, or read it on a tablet using larger text in your browser settings.

    Avoid plan-sale scams that target Vietnamese seniors

    Watch for door-to-door insurance agents in Vietnamese-American neighborhoods during the Medicare Open Enrollment period (October 15 to December 7). Some are honest. Some are not. A real Medicare representative will never come to your door without an appointment, will never ask for cash or a gift card, and will never threaten to cancel your benefits. If anyone uses pressure or fear, hang up or close the door. Then call your state SHIP at shiphelp.org for free, second-opinion advice.

    Never give your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank information to a caller who claims to be from Medicare. Medicare does not call you out of the blue. Hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE yourself if you are not sure.

    Medicare is the federal health insurance program for Americans age 65 and older. For Vietnamese-American seniors (người cao tuổi gốc Việt), the program can feel confusing because the paperwork, websites, and phone menus are built around English first. The good news is that the federal government has translated many key Medicare materials into Vietnamese, and a national network of free counselors offers help in Vietnamese in cities with larger Vietnamese populations.

    The State Health Insurance Help Program, known as SHIP, is funded by the Administration for Community Living and run state by state. SHIP counselors are trained volunteers and staff who give one-on-one, unbiased advice about Medicare enrollment, Medicare Advantage plans, Part D prescription drug plans, Medigap supplements, Medicare Savings Programs for lower-income beneficiaries, and Extra Help. SHIP services are always free. SHIP counselors do not sell insurance.

    In states with large Vietnamese-American communities — California, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Oregon — many SHIP offices keep a list of Vietnamese-speaking counselors. National SHIP can be reached at 1-877-839-2675 or shiphelp.org. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also publishes Vietnamese-language versions of the Medicare and You handbook and many enrollment forms at medicare.gov/about-us/accessibility-nondiscrimination-notice. The 1-800-MEDICARE line (1-800-633-4227) offers free Vietnamese interpretation by phone. You tell the English-speaking operator Vietnamese. And they connect a live interpreter at no cost.

    Older Vietnamese adults often rely on adult children to help with paperwork. That is fine and common. SHIP counselors welcome family members at appointments. What SHIP counselors caution against is signing up for a plan based on a single TV commercial, a cold phone call, or a salesperson at a community event. Those are insurance agents earning commission, not unbiased advisors.
