Staying Connected with the Vietnamese Community: AVCC Radio, Free Vietnamese News Apps, and YouTube Channels

Vietnamese-language radio, news apps, and YouTube channels keep older adults connected to the community. Here are the free resources and how to use them.

Open a web browser and go to littlesaigonradio.com or radio.vncr.net to listen live for free. If you are not in California, look for Vietnamese radio in your state by searching for your city plus Vietnamese radio. Many stations also publish a daily program schedule so you can listen for the cooking show, the news hour, or the spiritual talk that fits your interest. Bookmark the website on your phone or computer for one-tap listening tomorrow.

Install one Vietnamese news app on your phone

Open the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android). Search for nguoiviet, vnexpress, or vietbao. Tap Install. Once installed, open the app, go to Settings, and increase the text size. Most apps have a Larger Text or Font Size option that makes reading much more comfortable for older eyes. Daily reading is free. Save articles you want to read later by tapping the bookmark icon.

Subscribe to two or three YouTube channels for daily watching

Open the YouTube app. In the search bar, type SBTN Vietnamese, Paris by Night, or Đài Truyền Hình Việt Nam. When you find a channel you like, tap the Subscribe button. Subscribed channels appear on your YouTube home screen each time you open the app. For senior eyes, tap the gear icon on any video to change Quality to a higher number (720p or 1080p) and to turn on Captions in Vietnamese if available.

YouTube ads sometimes promote fake products and miracle cures targeted at Vietnamese seniors (weight loss pills, joint creams, get-rich schemes). Treat any ad with skepticism, especially if it promises fast results, asks for credit card details, or claims to be a secret known only to elders. Never enter credit card information into a YouTube ad. Real medical products are not sold this way.

Set a weekly call with family using free conference call services

Go to freeconferencecall.com on a computer. Sign up for a free account using your email. The site gives you a permanent dial-in number and access code. Email or text the dial-in number to family in Vietnam, California, Texas, Virginia — wherever loved ones live. Pick a day and time (Sunday afternoon Pacific time is common since it works for Vietnam evening). Each person dials the same number, enters the code, and joins the group call. The service supports up to 1,000 callers. Cost: free for U.S. callers, regular international rates for callers from Vietnam.

Many Vietnamese-American seniors live in households where English is the second language at best, and where the local newspaper, television news, and radio shows are all in English. Staying informed in Vietnamese — about Vietnamese-American community events, news from Vietnam, religious services, music, and health information — is a daily need. Fortunately, the Vietnamese-American media ecosystem is large and most of it is free.

Vietnamese-American radio stations broadcast in major markets: Little Saigon Radio (KALI 106.3 FM in Orange County, California), Saigon Radio (San Jose), Radio VNCR, and AVCC Radio (Asian Vietnamese Christian Community, depending on region). Many of these stations also stream live online and through smartphone apps. Listeners outside California can tune in by going to the station website on a computer or phone and clicking Listen Live, or by downloading the TuneIn Radio app and searching for the station name.

Vietnamese-language news apps include: Báo Người Việt (the Westminster, California paper of record for Vietnamese-Americans), VnExpress (Vietnam-based national paper, large international readership), VietBao, Người Lao Động, and Báo Tuổi Trẻ. All offer free phone apps in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Settings let you increase text size for easier reading.

YouTube is a deep well of Vietnamese-language content. Senior-friendly channels include: SBTN (Saigon Broadcasting Television Network, news and variety in Vietnamese), Việt Báo Online, Paris by Night clips (Thúy Nga productions, music and variety with subtitles), Đài Truyền Hình Việt Nam (state TV from Vietnam), and many independent channels covering cooking, gardening, Buddhist dharma talks, Catholic mass, and Vietnamese-American interviews. YouTube is free to watch. A paid YouTube Premium subscription removes ads but is not required.

Landline phones remain a key connection point for many older Vietnamese seniors. Free conference-call services like FreeConferenceCall.com let extended family in Vietnam, California, Texas, and Virginia join the same call once a week.
