The Volunteer Income Tax Help program, known as VITA, is an IRS-sponsored service that offers free tax preparation help to people who generally earn $67,000 or less per year, people with disabilities, and people with limited English proficiency. Certified volunteers — trained and approved by the IRS — prepare basic federal and state tax returns at no cost to you.
This is not a commercial tax prep service. There are no fees, no upsell offers, and no pressure to purchase anything. You show up at a VITA location, hand over your documents, and a certified volunteer prepares your return. Before filing, they walk you through what was entered and answer any questions you have.
VITA sites are located in community centers, libraries, schools, shopping centers, and other convenient public locations. They operate during tax season — generally from late January through mid-April — with some sites offering extended hours or appointments. Many locations also offer drop-off service, where you leave your documents and pick up the completed return later.
The types of returns VITA volunteers can prepare include W-2 income, Social Security, unemployment, interest income, and common credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and education credits. They cannot handle self-employment income with significant expenses, rental property income, or complex investment situations.
If you qualify, VITA is one of the best deals available during tax season. The volunteers are trained by the IRS, the service is free. And you leave with a properly filed return. Many people who use commercial tax preparation services would qualify for VITA and could save the preparation fee entirely.
