What Is a Chromebook and Is It Right for You?

Chromebooks are affordable laptops that run Google's operating system — great for browsing, email, and video calls but different from Windows PCs.

    1

    Understand what Chrome OS is

    ~15s
Chrome OS is an operating system — the software that runs the computer. It is made by Google and built around the Chrome browser. Think of it as a laptop that lives mostly on the internet.
    2

Check what you use your computer for

    ~17s
Make a list of things you do on a computer: email, browsing, video calls, streaming. If those are your main uses, a Chromebook can handle all of them. If you need specific Windows software like TurboTax desktop or Adobe Photoshop, check whether a web version exists first.
    3

    Know the limitations

    ~15s
Most programs you download and install on a Windows PC will not run on a Chromebook. However, many popular apps — like Microsoft Office — now have free web versions that work fine in Chrome OS.
    4

    Understand Google account requirement

    ~15s
To set up and use a Chromebook fully, you need a Google account (a Gmail address). If you do not have one, creating one is free and takes about five minutes.
    5

    Consider your budget

    ~15s
Chromebooks are available at many price points. A model in the $200–$350 range is often enough for everyday tasks. Look for at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage when comparing options.

A Chromebook is a laptop made by various manufacturers — including HP, Lenovo, and Acer — that runs Chrome OS instead of Windows or macOS. Chrome OS was built by Google and works a lot like the Chrome web browser you may already use. Almost everything on a Chromebook happens inside a browser window, so if you spend most of your computer time on websites, email, or video calls, a Chromebook can handle all of that very well.

Chromebooks tend to cost less than traditional laptops — many models are available for $200–$400 — and they start up quickly, update automatically, and are generally considered more resistant to viruses than Windows PCs. The main trade-off is that software you have installed on a Windows computer, like older versions of Microsoft Word or specialized programs, will not run directly on a Chromebook.

If you mostly browse the web, use Gmail or webmail, video chat on Zoom or Google Meet, and watch videos on YouTube or Netflix, a Chromebook will meet all of those needs without the complexity of a full Windows system.
